Walking to the Carleton library, umbrella in hand. Actually I just got off the No.4 bus from home, taken since it was raining. I didn't have time for this, I was supposed to be at my first day at a new branch in 1h15min. But then again.. I didn't have time not to, I'm busy tomorrow and the next day, then going to montreal, and I'm not immune from these fines.
Getting off the bus I wondered "Should I take a second to stuff this book into my bag so it doesn't get rained on? The one I just finished before getting off the bus?" I decided not to, then changed my mind. And I fumbled to hold umbrella and open my bag. And juggled things around a bit. And the the book started sailing backwards and rotating in slow motion. And I flailed my arms after it and only managed to speed up its spin.
And it hammered down upon the muddy grass and dirt. I cursed and went after it. I picked it up and looked in horror at the corner of the pages, smudged brown and green. There's no escape from responsibility this time. Brown and green! So I started wiping at it, smearing, to no avail.. I slobbered on my finger and poked and rubbed, but it only faded in the slightest way, and I was horrified to see that my pseudo-Carleton-card would obviously be revoked immediately.
I stormed, hot-faced, around the maze of hideous buildings to the back of the library. And I put the book in the slot. But it would yet come back to haunt me in other ways..
