Lupabitch posted this in her journal a little over a week or so ago. I posted a comment in her journal, but I was also moved to write in more detail in my own journal, it just took me awhile to get around to it. So here it is, the article I'm responding to ( Read more... )

Even if I wanted to be a father (and I admit that I sometimes feel a slight pang when I think about not carrying on the family name/bloodline), I am certain that I would be a rather /bad/ father. First and foremost of my reasons for that opinion is that the noise babies make (crying/screaming) is something that grates on my ears and nerves horrendously; I have virtually zero tolerance for it; I'm of the 'seen and not heard' school of thought. There's also the fact that I can't understand what they want (or what's wrong) if they can't talk coherently; I have this problem with adults, particularly those who seem to communicate more in 'txtspk' than real English. That might be fine for use on a cellphone, but not in general conversation. Then there's having to make sure they don't get into things they shouldn't when they learn to walk/crawl. And so the list goes on. I have not yet stopped being amazed when people say that they want kids. As of about three days ago I now have a five-day-old baby in the house, and although so far he's quiet most of the time, I'm told that in about a month or so he'll get much worse, and once the teething starts... I shudder to think. I'm definitely investing in ear plugs, though I can't sleep with them in, unfortunately; quite uncomfortable to wear.
