NORTH MIAMI BEACH
After crash, detective in critical condition
Orestes ''Oreo'' Lorenzo, a North Miami Beach police detective, was clinging to life Saturday after he was injured in a car crash Friday night in Pembroke Pines.
Lorenzo, an eight-year department veteran, was driving home from work at 11:30 p.m. when he was collided with another car attempting to turn left onto Pines Boulevard from 180th Avenue.
He was ejected from his unmarked police car. It appears his seat belt tore during the accident, said Pines police spokesman David Golt. The other driver was not injured.
Lorenzo was in critical condition at Memorial Regional Hospital in Hollywood.
Saturday morning, scores of officers from various agencies visited the hospital. Lorenzo, 39, had been promoted to the agency's detective bureau about 1 ½ years ago and had just wrapped up a stint as the department's union president.
He has a wife and three daughters, said North Miami Beach Police Chief Bill Berger. ''He's very, very popular,'' the chief said. ``Just a real class act.''
