Dean hit the ground with a thud and he let out a snarl and saw he was still in the cowboy clothes. He looked at the amulet and he tried to take it off, but he couldn’t. it wouldn’t go over his head, the chain had shortened until the amulet was right on his chest, a bit above where his amulet used to rest. The one that could supposedly find God. Dean definitely felt lightheaded and he then looked at the diamond in the center of the amulet Gabriel said he’d stored his grace in…it was a hazel color that Dean realized was the color of his own eyes and he remembered the light being blue at one point…what did this mean? He sighed and just looked around now.
He found he was in a desert of some sort and he frowned as he looked up and saw no sunlight, no real sky, just a swirl of gray clouds. Dean frowned and reached into his overcoat and blinked. He pulled out a sword with symbols on it and he saw it was longer than the ones they had and he realized…it was Gabriel’s own sword. The archangel must have given it to him for protection… He sighed and walked through this desert…Wind being blown up into his face to the point where the hat was pushed into his eyes to stop Sand from being blown into his eyes and the overcoat kept the sand from being blown into his clothing and being discomforting…No wonder Gabriel left him in this outfit, he would have been so much more miserable without it..
He heard a sweep of wings nearby and he looked up and looked around and tensed. He could sense something he couldn’t quite see. He had hidden his new amulet under his clothes and put it against his bare skin…He felt when it heated up and when his eyes itched like crazy…Then it was like a fine film went over his eyes and suddenly everything was in a sharper relief and he also…saw a pulsing white form with six wings, and the head of a lion. He remembered Zacheriah gloating about how he looked in heaven.
“Hello Zacheriah,” He said cooly even as Zacheriah seemed surprised, but then he lunged at Dean, who smirked and waited and then plunged the archangel’s sword into Zacheriah’s true form. He heard Zacheriah cursing at him as he died for the last time, falling to the ground dead. Dean kept going through the storm, wondering why the hell his eyes hadn’t burned out seeing Zacheriah, but he figured now that the amulet was helping him with that… He felt this…irritating sensation in his head when he came to a certain point of the desert, where he could see a forest and an ocean in the distance. He headed toward the forest and the feeling tugging in his mind was telling him to go towards the forest as well, so when he went towards it, the weird tugging faded nearly to nothing. He saw storm clouds gathering in the sky above the forest and Dean frowned and really hoped it wouldn’t rain even as he got there to two magnificent gates… Yet purgatory seemed to hate him as it got pitchblack when it started raining. The only light he had was the light of the amulet, which shone brightly, even under the overcoat and shirts that he could see where he was stepping anyway...
Why? Tell me why? It was a faint voice on the breeze, very faint and with the slight tone Dean could hear…it was an angel…He realized whatever it was Gabriel had given him, it allowed him to hear and see angels… A tug told him to go to the left and he did. He tripped several times and cursed loudly to the point where he scared off some animals but one thing came to him, gleaming white in the darkness. A Pegasus, a pure white one, with wings like an angels’. Dean stopped and looked at it curiously and the Pegasus came over to him and nudged him.
“You want me…to get on?” Dean asked. Knowing that since he was in purgatory anything was bound to be here…The Pegasus bobbed it’s head and Dean smiled. He was tired and sore. It would be nice to get off his feet, not to mention he was soaked. He climbed onto the Pegasus and wrapped his arms around it and it snorted softly and Dean didn’t know why, but he felt at ease and warm as he stroked the sleek neck of the Pegasus as it trotted through the forest with him…a steady easy rhythm…
He wasn’t aware of falling asleep, but when he woke he felt air about him and noticed the Pegasus was flying. It was a smooth effortless thing but Dean was scared of heights or more… airplanes…but…The Pegasus was going at an easy pace and was skimming over treetops.
“Are you…taking me to Gabriel?” He asked softly and the Pegasus whinnied.
I try. But angel wander. You find him better with amulet. Came a soft voice speaking halting English and he realized it was the Pegasus, But I be your ride as long as you want.
“Thank you,” Dean muttered and the Pegasus gave a soft whiney as it flew still and Dean would wait for that tug in his head to send him in the right direction, yet for now it was basically pointing him to keep going straight. He noticed after a while that the Pegasus was tiring and he patted it quietly.
“Rest for as long as you want, alright? I don’t want you exhausted,” He said to the Pegasus who whinnied softly and descended into the nearest clearing and started grazing. It didn’t seem to mind Dean on it’s back as Dean realized his clothes were still a bit damp, but he kept petting the sleek neck on the Pegasus and it whinnied, happy for the attention as Dean dozed on the back.
“Can you see angels?” He muttered to the Pegasus.
Yes. One you seek very sad. Sad and beautiful. Many many wings. The Pegasus snorted and flicked it’s tail and Dean was quiet after that, falling asleep on the Pegasus again. That is until it felt like there was a ringing in his head and he jolted awake and the Pegasus snorted in alarm.
“Down! Go down!” Dean shouted as the wind was loud and the Pegasus obeyed and broke through clouds and Dean gasped at the moisture that clung to them to where the Pegasus ended up going towards an island. The amulet started burning hot as they got closer and closer and he shifted in discomfort when suddenly it was gone and the feeling told him to go back and he cursed aloud and told the Pegasus that Gabriel had gone back to the mainland. It turned around and went back as Dean shivered violently on the flying horse. Why…why did he let the younger Gabriel put the damn amulet on him and send him to fucking purgatory of all things?! He shivered the rest of the way, the Pegasus definitely concerned, not to mention he was exhausted from lack of food…They stopped after a while and he rode the Pegasus through the forest and shot a rabbit. The Pegasus was displeased but it knew this was the way of humans as Dean skinned and cooked it over a fire which he huddled up next to, sneezing into the grass on occasion, shivering like mad. The Pegasus settled next to him and wrapped him halfway in a warm wing and Dean thanked the Pegasus even as he watched the rabbit finish cooking and he grabbed it from the fire and he shifted his overcoat and vest a bit and felt both over. Nice and warm. He put them on and he loved the feel of warmth. He was pretty sure he was sick even as he sniffed and after eating the unseasoned rabbit he went up against the Pegasus and it wrapped its wing around him to keep him warm during the night. When he woke he felt like he definitely had a full on cold even as he silently climbed onto the Pegasus and it took to the air. He was barely conscious when he felt that burning feeling and told the Pegasus and it skimmed trees until coming to a huge oak where it landed with the soft sound of hooves on grass as it cantered up to the tree and Dean looked around, still aware of that weird film on his eyes that allowed him to see angels. He gave a dejected sigh and buried his face in the pegasus’ mane. The Pegasus sensed his distress and snorted as they came to a stop at the tree and Dean got off it.
“I’m never gonna find him…” He muttered as he sat up against the tree and got a hold of the amulet and turned it over in his hands and the Pegasus snorted as Dean sneezed and he cursed.
“Bless you,” Said a voice with a tone to it and Dean looked up and started, seeing an angel with more than six wings, probably eight…His true form was much brighter than Zacheriah’s and he was more human shaped too as the angel struggled to try and make a human form. The angel landed next to Dean and the Pegasus snorted and let out a whinny of greeting.
Hello Gabriel! The Pegasus said happily and Gabriel looked to the Pegasus and pet it, the Pegasus seeming pleased.
“Hello Amelia,” Gabriel muttered as he ran a hand over her muzzle carefully before looking to Dean, who was huddled in a ball, trying to stay warm, sniffing.
“Dude, you crying?” Gabriel asked and Dean shook his head.
“No, it was raining then flying then going through a cloud towards the fucking island…Been cold almost constantly,” He mumbled as he pulled his overcoat closer to him.
“Mmm. So I see…So what brings you here?” Gabriel asked seeming like he really doesn’t know. Dean pulled out the amulet, not seeming to know how to explain it. Gabriel takes a hold of it.
“Oh. You…came here for me?” Gabriel’s voice was softer, he seemed touched.
“I apparently was the only one who could. Though…I was the one who got you to try and kill your brother…I figured I owed you,” He said softly before he burst into a coughing fit that had him teary eyed and gasping for air.
Dean’s breathing was shallow and he groaned in discomfort. He realized he knew why Gabriel had really sent him here.
“Dean you need help with anything?” Gabriel asked, concern clear as the Pegasus was grazing nearby.
“Yes…” He muttered, “With getting out of here,” He said as he felt a hand on his shoulder.
“I…cant get us out without a vessel,” He muttered and Dean laughed.
“That’s why I’m here isn’t it, I can be a good temporary vessel I suppose, cause really what the hell happened to your grace? One minute the diamond was blue the next it was this…I’m not stupid okay? I know it means something important,” He mutters, he had a pounding headache and a large part of him really longed for Gabriel to jump his bones for some reason. Part of the reason being that the angel could heal him of his fucking cold…but the other reasons…He was scared of those reasons right now, though he knew one of them was that he had an attraction for the archangel.
“It means I can use you as a temporary vessel and that you’d be more than able to contain my grace…” The hand on Dean’s shoulder squeezed it.
“Could you make this damn cold go away?” Dean asked with a forced laugh. Gabriel chuckled.
“Yeah I can, that and I could change your clothes. I know you had to go back in time but still Cas made you look like some sort of hero.” Gabriel says with a chuckle and Dean grimaces a bit.
“Yeah well I saved your ass from being exposed back then. Took a few stakes for you,” Dean muttered which had Gabriel speechless.
“We can talk about that later, okay?” Gabriel said gently and Dean nodded.
“Yes,” He said firmly and then there was mind numbing pain and heat that went through him and he was aware of the amulet burning him even as Gabriel settled into Dean and Dean was aware that he wasn’t in control anymore. Dean felt wings and he felt the way Gabriel refused to burn Dean out of his head even as Gabriel went to the Pegasus and hugged her before he looked up at the sky and took a deep breath even as Dean passed out…
--
Gabriel flapped all of his wings and was soaring through the air with hard flapping beats, a hand on the amulet that held his grace as he drained the item of the grace that he needed to break through as he went fast and faster until he was so fast he had enough speed to get through and it felt like crashing through glass. He found himself on a long stretch of road and he took in another breath and oriented himself and tried to see how Dean was doing and saw he was fine but the poor guy was exhausted… He could feel that his brothers weren’t on earth anymore and he poked around in Dean’s head to learn that they’d gotten Luci and Mike down into the cage. Well two birds with one stone, right? Though poor Sam… Gabriel took a moment to enjoy the fresh air before arriving in the Elysian Fields Motel Ballroom and to look at his homemade body. He scoffed at the dead Baldor in the room and then went over to his homemade vessel and healed him up just fine and started to leave when suddenly Dean was awake and grabbing him.
“No..please no..you’re so warm…’s nice…” Dean was mumbling and Gabriel blinked, shocked by those words but he tugs his arm out of Dean’s grip.
“You’ll be glad to be rid of me Dean,” And with that he tries to leave and enters his healed vessel and he catches Dean as he falls. Dean technically was still out cold and exhausted. Gabriel eyed Dean in his old West outfit and smirks, leaving it on him and then taking the phone out of Dean’s pocket and coughing and making his voice sound like Deans as he gets on the phone as he’s calling Sam. Gabriel felt a stir deep in his grace and looks back to Dean.
“Dean! You’re alive! Where are you?!” Sam was asking but Gabriel lets the voice drop.
“Hey Sammy boy. Dean’s unconscious right now. I just wanted to know where to show up to drop him off and all that. Catch up, have a few beers, you know. Regular stuff.” He grins when he renders Sam speechless for a moment as Gabriel gets a hold of Dean as he was told to go to Robert Singer’s home. He arrived at Bobby’s home in seconds and he saw Sam in the living room with the other hunter and Gabriel looks to both.
“Well? Where’s his bed?” Gabriel asks with a raised brow and Sam leads Gabriel to a guest bedroom where Gabriel lies Dean down before he goes down to the first story where he lets out a breath and flops down onto the couch.
“You were gone a year and a half before Castiel toughed that Rock.” Sam says after a moment. Then when you sent me and Cas back…You sent Dean to purgatory…we didn’t see him for two years, Gabriel!” Sam snarled and Gabriel looked to him.
“Hey don’t blame me, I can’t control my past sel-“
“DEAN DIED TO SAVE YOUR IMAGE BACK THEN! HE WILLINGLY ACCEPTED THAT DAMN AMULET WITH YOUR DAMN GRACE!” Sam flinches when Bobby puts a hand on his shoulder.
“I know Sam. He told me,” He felt guilty. Guilty for having put Dean in that situation and he shifted uncomfortably.
“How did you get the both of you out?” Bobby asks and Gabriel didn’t answer. He was thinking of how best to put it.
“The…ah amulet when it changes to the color of the person’s eyes wearing it if they can ah…contain my grace…Dean since he is able to contain Michael’s grace, he can contain mine, that’s how we got out.” He saw Sam go red in the face with anger.
“He said yes on his own Sam. He made his own decision,” Gabriel said calmly before he got up. He took in a breath and vanished before he could be questioned any longer.
--
Cold. He is so cold. He hated that. He hated that Gabriel had left him so cold… Gabriel had been so warm and his grace…his grace had been comforting…So when he left…When he left Dean couldn’t help but shiver… Dean was half awake when he felt a warmth on his shoulder and he turned his head and opened his eyes to see Sam there. He saw Sam looked so much more worn and his brother looked somewhat hollow, like an empty bottle.
Dean smiles and tosses aside the cowboy hat and he let his brother hug him half to death.
“Dean, thank God you’re alive!” Sam whispered. Dean noticed his brother was trembling.
“Why wouldn’t I be, Sammy?” He asked softly and Sam just gripped him tighter.
“It was purgatory, Dean. Even Cas didn’t know if you’d ever find Gabriel and if you two could get back at all…” Sam’s hands clenched at Dean’s back, which for some reason was sore where six wings had been there at one point and he let out a hiss. Sam pulled away and Dean rubbed his back carefully.
“Sorry Dean it’s just…you really did say yes to Gabriel, didn’t you?” Sam asked and Dean sighed.
“Yeah I did. It was the one way we could get out,” He said quietly, “And damn it just how hard was he flying? My fucking back’s sore…” Dean trails off and looks to Sam again.
“How long was I gone, Sam?” He asked and Sam bit his lip.
“Two years. You were gone for two long years…” Sam muttered as he heard Dean’s stomach growl, his mouth twitched in a smile, “Me and Bobby will make you something to eat,” He says softly and Dean nods and watches Sam leave before he strips and goes into the bathroom attached to the room and he lets out a sigh as he goes to the bathroom an then notices the amulet. He takes it off. He actually can…He sets it aside, but he feels an overwhelming sense of loss when he does and he swallows, reminding himself that Gabriel doesn’t have his grace in there anymore, that the archangel is off somewhere else on his own again, probably pranking some poor person. Dean turns on the shower and has it warm…but it’s not as warm as the feel of Gabriel’s grace, bone deep and comfortable and damn it Dean longs for it…He shudders, feeling so cold… He then stills. He realizes that what he misses is not only the archangel’s warmth but him in general. Dean lets the water wash over him for a long time. He comes to one conclusion as to why he feels so hollow, so cold right now. He loves the archangel.
--
Gabriel sat in a tree near Bobby’s house and he stared out at the sky and flexes his wings…He couldn’t get the words Dean had spoke out of his head. The pleading words…Dean hadn’t wanted him to go and thinking back now, he was pretty sure he knew why. He could tell the Hunter had feelings for him when he’d entered him as a vessel. What Gabriel didn’t realize was how strong they were, nor how strong his own were for Dean. Dean alone had always attracted him. Dean was the one who got him to see things for the way they were. Dean who never backed down even in the face of death, who had never said yes to Michael…but said yes to Gabriel… He loved and trusted Gabriel…holy crap. That was something he hardly ever found…and Dean…yeah he loved Dean too, he’d admit that. It was like pulling pigtails, the Mystery spot stunt…and then Well Gabriel admitted to himself that he’d wanted to screw Dean the moment he saw him as he was playing that janitor. Fuck Gabriel had fantasized how the hunter would feel for weeks, months after and even now he could feel his vessel’s blood start to rush and he could feel his excitement at the thoughts and he shook his head like a dog. No. He… Crap. Dean had that effect on him, had him have moments of clarity that he would have had at a later time. Dean saved his ass in the past because he loved him. Saved him from purgatory because he loved him. Said yes because he trusted and loved him…How was Gabriel supposed to react to that…?
--
Sam noticed after a few days that Dean was paler, and that Gabriel hadn’t come around. Dean seemed to be shivering at every minute and no matter how many blankets were wrapped around him, or the fact he was in front of a fire…He kept saying it wasn’t that kind of cold, that it was something else, a chill on the inside. Sam had a bad feeling about this. Maybe purgatory had done something to his brother. Dean was shivering silently as he was huddled up in front of the fire. Sam offered him hot chocolate and Dean accepted it. The warmth only seemed to work for a little bit…but at least it was something…
Dean grew paler and thinner with each passing day until he refused to leave his room and Sam was confused. So confused that he called for Gabriel, the archangel was there within a second.
“You rang?” He asked with a smirk but Sam glared at him and Gabriel faltered.
“What?” He asked in an innocent voice and Sam dragged his hand across his face.
“Dean’s been shivering and cold ever since you dropped him off. He can’t get warm and hot drinks only help for about ten minutes before he’s cold again. He refuses to come out of his room now. He’s not eating either. Sam watched as Gabriel’s eyes darkened and he cursed before vanishing. Sam heard an undignified yelp from upstairs and then he smirked. He figured if anyone could help Dean, it would be Gabriel.
--
“Boo!” Came Gabriel’s voice from nowhere and Dean swore he’d have a heart attack and would deny yelping til his deathbed. He saw Gabriel and saw how the angel was looking him over. The archangel sighed but then took a hold of Dean and pulled off his shirt and then he drew Dean close and the angel dragged him onto a suddenly bigger bed. Dean wasn’t complaining, especially when the angel radiated the warmth of his grace and oh how it warmed him…He felt normal and even then some with Gabriel here, holding him and he didn’t mind it at all. The angel kept him close on the bed, keeping a hand on Dean’s chest, keeping him warm and comfy…
“You haven’t been sleeping,” it’s not a question but Dean nods anyway.
“Too cold to fall asleep…but now…” He smiled at Gabriel, who was looking at Dean curiously, “Now I’m warm…and you’re here…” Dean muttered and he smiled at Gabriel who pushed his hair back.
“I’m sorry about this Dean, I didn’t think my leaving would have this affect on you,” He said softly. Dean frowned.
“What do you mean?” He asked softly and Gabriel smiled at him.
“It’s touching actually, your body’s craving my grace, the warmth of it, that’s why you’re warm now, cause I’m here,” Gabriel said softly. Dean chuckled and turned and looked at Gabriel’s hazel eyes before he pressed a kiss to the archangel’s lips.
“I’m craving more than just your grace. I want you, I want your love. I trust you and I love you or I wouldn’t have done all I have for you,” He said softly and he watched Gabriel’s eyes light up and the angel grinned.
“I love you too, Dean, it felt wrong, being without you,” He said softly as he got closer and started kissing Dean and Dean let out a happy laugh as they started to strip and tease each other’s naked bodies. Dean doesn’t mind that Gabriel’s the one to be on top and he has to stifle his yell of pleasure as he has his orgasm at the job the archangel has given him, not to mention he fucking loved the feel of Gabriel in him, even if it was physical for now… but it seemed like something else is going on when Gabriel has a smile that says he did something else, but he won’t tell Dean what it is.
“You’ll find out soon enough,” Gabriel says softly before cleaning up, “Now…if you’ll excuse me, I have someone I need to talk to…and Dean? Sweet dreams,” And that’s all Dean sees before Gabriel’s touching two fingers to his head and Dean’s slipping into a comfy darkness, seeing Gabriel smile at him before he didn’t see anything anymore.
--
Gabriel appears downstairs looking pleased with himself and Sam can’t help but be curious as to what the hell was going on.
“Is he asleep?” Sam asked, “Is he better?” He saw Gabriel smirk at him as the archangel sat next to him.
“He’ll be fine, but damn I never thought that would happen…” He says shaking his head. Sam tries to ask what happened but Gabriel stops him.
“His body was craving the warmth of my grace. I had no clue I swear! Must have had to do with the cold I burned out of him from purgatory when I took him as a temporary vessel.” Gabriel was trying to tell Sam the truth, Sam could see that and it was the only reason he didn’t try and rip the archangel’s throat out.
“You put some of your grace in him…” It wasn’t a question. Gabriel smirked.
“You always were the smart one. He should be fine now,” He said as he looked up at the ceiling, “I put him to sleep, so he’ll either wake up in a few hours or days. Depends how much sleep his body wants…And while he’s out…I need to go and do something…” And before Sam could say anything, the angel was gone. Sam sighed and couldn’t help but be a little angry with Gabriel. Why couldn’t the bastard be in one place?
--
He waited by Dean’s bed the few days it took for the young man to wake up. When Dean did wake, he was still warm, pleasantly so, and the warmth was in his chest somewhere around his heart…But then something else caught his attention, there was someone else in the room… He sat up and looked to who turned out to be Gabriel who grinned at him.
“Hello my mate I think you’ll like the pie and other food I have ready for you,” He smiles at Dean who blinks at him.
“Mate…?” Dean asked as Gabriel handed him a plate and fork.
“Yeah, it was how I could get that bit of grace to stick with you, had to do it through sex, so we ah…have a bond now,” Gabriel says softly. Dean stared at the Archangel for a long time and he didn’t know what to say so he ate the food and knew Gabriel was watching him. He then out the plate on a bedside dresser and got up, grabbed Gabriel and pinned him to the bed, promptly wrapping around him and soaking in his warmth.
“I couldn’t be happier,” He says softly and Gabriel chuckles and warm wings wrap around them and Dean smiles and falls back asleep
