About the Twilight Fandom

Jul 19, 2008 19:28

I've been hearing this a lot lately and it's really starting to bother me, so I thought I would express my thoughts about it here.

Lately I've been hearing from some people in the Twilight fandom, about how much they are starting to dislike the growth of the Twilight saga's popularity, so much that some are starting to dislike the book.
I find those ( Read more... )

I think it's great that twilight is popular. there is alot more coverage on it this way. which means more opportunity for fans to be able to read articles and get spoilers about the movie and books and so on.

And besides, I enjoy discussing the books with my friends, I'm even lending some of my friends the books so that we can talk about it, all in hopes that they'll go see the movie with me.

But i do think that with the popularity comes a much younger audience that is beginning to read, which limits what stephanie can write, which frankly annoys me, We've already had one giant fandom(harry potter) that was meant for kids, but otherwise i think the more the merrier!

I think what Stephenie writes in terms of audience doesn't really change that much, it just develops in various directions. We've already seen with 'The Host' that the woman can write a variety of things. I have read somewhere that when she started writing Twilight she didn't really know that it was a teen fiction book so that affected the second book. I think she says this on her site, actually. Originally there was going to be one sequel, rather than a set of four.

I have no problems with the growth of Twilight. It always WAS popular, It's just becoming popular in a different way now. People who don't want it to be popular make no sense to me, If it weren't popular, only Twilight would of came out. No other books. I'm glad it's becoming more popular. I'm glad I can see it places I go, And random people will say it's so cool I read it! Of course it'll bring along more negative stuff and the 'followers' but ooh well! All books turned into movies do.

Hmm, yes, i see what you mean.
I'm a new fan myself, so yeah.

Anyway, like you said it's kind of the same thing with Happy Potter.
I'm not an HP fan at all.
But i have nothing against it.
I can see where some people are coming from, though.

When something grows so big and becomes so popular, it becomes one of those things that everyone likes..and you're "cool" if you like it.
Like go with the flow.. where everyone suddenly likes something... because it's in, and because everyone else likes it.
That annoys me.
And so all of a sudden, they'll be a flow of fans.. and you wouldnt even be able to call them all "fans" because it's just one of those things.

I hope that made sense.

Yes, but eventually those "fans" that are just in it for the trend go away. The true fans don't, that's why it bothers me that so many said "true" fans say they may start to dislike the books because of their recent pop-culture stature.

I think those said "true fans" who are starting to dislike the series bc it's becoming popular aren't true fans at all...Their reasoning is completely stupid :/

It's great that Twilight is becoming more and more popular, and credited for it's greatness. But with that comes the whole younger audience, and those "trend-setters" who will do anything that's new and hot.
I'm disappointed slightly only because with the growing number of fans, and the movie comming out to boost the popularity of the series, the series will seem to be treated like a fad that comes and goes. It also really bothers me that I see a lot of kids half my age who haven't even finished the series or read the book pour themselves over Edward Cullen because he's becomming recognized as some brooding celebrity.

So that's my bit. I do enjoy more and more people accepting the wonderful world SMeyer has written for us, but the growing "trend" is annoying me a bit.

Like I said to the person above, those "fans" that are just in it for the trend will eventually go away when things quite down, but we true fans will remain. :)

I suppose that's what we should expect. Hopefully the movie doesn't thrust us with an overload of those annoying fans though :/

Yes, we'll be here for B/E forever :)

The annoying younglins will always be there, it happens with all fandoms. Especially with the movie, because I believe that is what has thrown Twilight into a complete spotlight.

I am happy that Twilight is getting people to read, like Harry Potter did, but it annoys me when the fans go haywire. As much as you love the series, I don't know . . .
As for the new additions to the fandom, I agree, I think that if someone loves the books, let them love the books, despite how long they've known about the series. The fact that people are spending time reading because of the books is amazing, and that's what I love about the books. Everyone I know absolutely loves them, and books do have the power to change people's lives, as you have said with Harry Potter AND Twilight (both of which I love with all of my heart).

Twilight fans old and new tend to go haywire all the time over the smallest things. I've said it before and I mean it, this is the craziest fandom i've been in ever. So those little moments of going nutz have started to become normal to me, though the negavite thoughtless comments (like with the movie casting for example) have annoyed me a lot. But i'm one of those crazy fans, I even have a video blog about Twilight! lol I am however very 'obssesive' about things I like.

Well, there are the people who got mad because the set wasn't how they imagined it. Everyone imagined the set differently, they're not going to cast your perfect Edward, your perfect Jacob, etcetera etcetera . . .
