I think the saddest, most heart wrenching kind of love story is one where

One of the characters is dead and comes back as a ghost/living organism and the story begins happy and goofy as the two characters try to figure out what the hell is happening, the interactions between the dead and the living, the concept of death itself, the concept of life itself and then fall in love in the process.

Then of course there's angst backstory about the dead character's past and the living character's future.

And then the dead character returns to the dead.

That all is terrible and awful and sad because there is a tradeoff afterwards between: 1) the living character never giving up his/her love for the dead character and hence living out the rest of his/her life in mourning and living without the true love or his/her life for the rest of his/her life OR 2) the idea that love doesn't last forever and the living character will move on and find someone else to fill the gap.

Call me old fashioned, but I really like the idea of soul mates and finding someone you can love forever. I'm okay with thinking that there's a possibility that one will never meet that soulmate, but life sets up chances for you to do so and you just have to decide what kind of path you want to tread.

So naturally I'm uneasy about people whose spouses die and they get remarried. It makes sense to do so and I don't blame them but at the same time it's saddening.
