The Amazing Spider-Man and a Trio of Tetras

Jul 11, 2012 14:44

Today I got the first of what will become our Legion. 'Legion' is what Nick and I have decided to call our school of neon tetras. (It would be impossible to name each tetra individually.) Because it's bad to get too many fish at once, I've started with three. We're aiming for a total of ten. They're living in the tank Crowley and Aziraphaile used to live in. (Don't worry, I have it a really good scrub. Gold fish are messier than they look!) I don't have any pictures yet because they're not easy to photograph.

Crowley (A.K.A. "Fishball"), Aziraphaile and Gulpo live in the big tank. They are cold water fantails. Crowley is a calico, Aziraphaile is orange with white/clear tipped fins and Gulpo is a red cap. (White with a big red spot on his head.)

Carpathian the Siamese fighting fish lives alone in his own tank. He is reddish-purple with blue tipped fins.

The Legion (currently a Trio) are neon tetras in their own tank.

Over the course of the next few weeks/months, I will get more tetras until we have ten.

Gwen will be giving us another fish tank in the future after she's sorted out all her moving stuff. This tank will either hold more cold water fish (I'm still thinking of doing a Cult of Skaro naming thing) or some tropicals. Maybe I'll combine Carpathian with the Legion. I've seen tetras get on very well with Siamese fighters.

In other news, Nick and I went to go see The Amazing Spider-Man. I remember when I first heard they were re-booting Spider-Man only ten years after the Rami ones, I had my doubts. I like the majority of the Spider-Man trilogy. It does have many, many flaws, I will certainly grant you that, but over-all I feel it's a good product. I think that these movies will go down in history as a big guilty pleasure for many people.

The first trailer to Amazing Spider-Man didn't wow me. However, the trailers that came after did. Peter Parker got his sense of humour back! Yes! Peter is meant to be witty and crack jokes while fighting. It's his way of dealing with all the crap in his life. Oh, and they're doing the Lizard as the villian? Fantastic! Curt Conners was such a tease in the other movies, so it's good to see him be featured.

The movie itself is good, I am pleased to say. It's another re-telling of Spidey's origin story, but it's done differently enough from the Rami one that you don't feel bored by it. They managed to show instead of tell "with great power, comes great responsibility," which impressed me. Everything is well-acted and the special effects are great. I liked the focus of Peter as a high-school kid. They got his photography hobby in. There's no sign of MJ, but I'm cool with that. I know he was with Gwen Stacey for a long time in the comics before Mary Jane. I liked as well the fact with Peter's parents had a bigger role to play. (Peter's dad first cross-bred the type of spider that will later bite Peter, plus he helped work out how to combine animal and human DNA.)

The big highlight for me was the Lizard. Conners isn't my favourite Spider-Man villain. (That goes to Doctor Octopus.) However, I feel that they did the Lizard right. The design was impressive, and I liked that they showed he still had a brain. (Mixing chemicals to make a smoke bomb.) They also did the Jekyll/Hyde thing well, particularly at the end.

A couple of other scenes I enjoyed included Spidey making a web in the sewers and sitting in the middle of it to wait and feel for vibrations like real spiders do. I also liked every action/fight scene because they were all fast and exciting.

A few minor notes: The movie is long, and in the middle it feels long and it drags a bit. The Lizard's healing abilities are more than a little out of control and that made me roll my eyes a few times. Also the soundtrack, while it did its job of setting the tone for each scene, wasn't as memorable as Danny Elfman's was in the first Spider-Man movie and I found myself actually missing it and 'hearing' Elfman's soundtrack in my head a few times while watching this film. (Like during the opening credits.)

Other than those things, it's a fantastic movie and I recommend it to comic book movie fans everywhere. Four and a half out of five.

This week... The Dark Knight Rises. *squee!*

Random Quote from The Amazing Spider-Man:

Spider-Man: Ahem, you know, if you're going to steal cars, don't dress like a car thief.
Car Thief: You a cop?
Spider-Man: You seriously think I'm a cop in a skintight red and blue suit?
