MORTAL LIABILITY
Chapter 05
Edward hurried me into the Volvo. I didn’t say anything; Edward stayed silent as well. Soon enough I realized we were headed to Edward’s house. I looked out my window; the forest seemed to swallow us up; enclosing all around us. I liked that, it made me feel safe. We pulled into the drive way. Alice already pulled in; Sonia was just stepping out of the car. Her bag slung over left shoulder. When I thought about it, her bag was always on her left shoulder. Her face still expressionless, she glanced at the Volvo, but she turned away quickly and headed to the front door.
Edward opened the car door for me; he smiled and held out this hand, I took it and he helped me up. Once he shut the door he picked me up. He set me down at the front door, and we entered. Ellen was talking with Carlisle and Jasper. “Edward, we need you” Carlisle called him over. Edward hesitated for a moment. “Bella, go upstairs with Alice” he said. He didn’t want me to hear this conversation. I began my way upstairs, but stopped less than half way up. I sat down; hoping I would be able to hear them, get the information I wanted. “Bella, go upstairs” I heard Edward sigh. I stumbled up; trying to be silent. I walked up the stairs slowly.
I walked down the hall and into Alice’s room. Alice wasn’t there, but Sonia was. She must have been living in Alice’s room. She was lying on her back on a bed. She turned her head “Hey” she greeted me “Hi” I replied, I came to sit next to her. That was the first time I really saw her eyes, they were a grayish blue. I looked around the room. She had a bed and suitcase of what I guessed was ‘her’ clothes, and a guitar. “Do you play?” I asked motioning to the black acoustic. She sat up and looked at it “Yup” she sighed. I looked at her scars. “What did that” I said, referring to the scars “Can’t tell you” she sighed
“You’re not aloud?” I asked, Edward must have talked to her already
“Yup” she said, I sighed.
Alice showed up. She had some clothes hung over her arm. “Hi Bella!” she chirped, it seemed everyone had forgotten what had happened at school. “I need to take Sonia for a second” Alice smiled, I glanced at Sonia; who was slowly moving off the bed “No…” she said under her breath. Suddenly Alice raced over and grabbed Sonia, they were gone.
A couple minutes later they returned. Sonia was dressed in a new outfit; a tank top and a skirt. Sonia had one hand over her right shoulder; she frowned. What was on her shoulder? Sonia saw me staring at her shoulder. She sighed “Don’t ask, it’s pretty nasty” she said walking past me sideways, so I couldn’t see her back. She pulled out a sweater, she zipped it up. Then sat next to me, “Can I see?” I asked
“You don’t want to”
“Yes I do” I argued “Take that off!” Alice protested against her clothing “No” Sonia smirked “Please show me” I pleaded
“I might not have a choice” Sonia watched Alice moving closer. She unzipped the sweater and through it back in the suitcase. Alice looked pleased.
The wound on Sonia’s shoulder was pretty nasty. She had four long lines down her back. But one of them stood out the most, it was a much longer, and thicker line, the flesh on this one was shredded; tied up with large stitches (the stitches seemed to be stretched from the thickness of the cut). It was a deep burgundy; it was extremely noticeable against her skin. I flinched; Sonia rolled her eyes “Pretty bad, eh? Even after five months its still hurts” she said looking at it as well. “W-what did that?” this question hit me hard “Can’t tell you” she sighed “Can’t you just tell me?”
“No, sorry, but trust me, I want to. It’s not fair that out of all of us I can’t tell you. But Edward should realize eventually you will find out, he is just worried you’ll get hurt” she shook her head. Why does Edward think I’ll get hurt?
I looked back at Alice, Jasper was here too. “We need you downstairs” Jasper said, Sonia nodded “Edward is waiting for you too, Bella” he said looking at me, I stood and followed the crowd downstairs. Edward awaited me at the front door. He smiled at me. I felt myself loose balance a bit and my heart raced a little faster. Would I ever get used to him? I smiled in return. He picked me up “You looked a little dazed there” he whispered “I was” I whispered back, he smiled.
He carried me off to his Volvo and drove me home. When I entered Charlie was watching T.V. I made myself some dinner and ate slowly, thinking of what Sonia said. I felt stupid for not knowing it. Was the answer I wanted closer than I thought? Sonia said that I should have the right to know more than they do. Why?
“Bella?” I heard Charlie call “Yes?” I asked walking towards him. I entered the room, he looked at me. “I am not going to be here after school tomorrow or on the week end”
“Oh, ok”
“I don’t have to leave Bella if you don’t want me too” he reassured me “No, I’m ok Dad” I said smiling.
I walked up to my room. Edward was already there, sitting on the edge of my bed. He smiled at me, I smiled in return. I decided not to question him tonight. I walked over and sat next to him. He stared into my eyes, I stared back. His eyes were darker, but not black. He sighed “Bella, tomorrow my family, Ellen and I are going hunting…I’m sorry, but from now on we hunt every Friday night right through to the end of Saturday. With a human living in our house…we need to be careful…but I’m leaving tomorrow after school” he stated quietly, for a reason I felt there was more than Sonia just being a human. “I understand” I sighed, I was taking this better than I thought “Sonia will be at my house the whole time, so you can visit her” he continued. “Edward, I’ll be okay” I reassured him “Just know, I will be back, as soon as possible” he whispered, I nodded.

I walked up to my room. Edward was already there, sitting on the edge of my bed. He smiled at me, I smiled in return. I decided not to question him tonight. I walked over and sat next to him.
