MORTAL LIABILITY chapter # 4
Chapter 04
I sighed and slowly my eyes opened. I sighed again. I sat up slowly, rubbing my eyes. My vision focused on Edward who sat on the rocking chair. He smiled at me. “Good morning” he smiled. I smiled in return “Hi” I said still groggy. I shook my head, to help me wake up. He didn’t give any information on what happened last night. I hoped this morning would be different.
I dragged my feet into the bathroom; I took a shower and got dressed. Edward walked me downstairs to the kitchen were he prepared my breakfast (as usual). I stuffed some cereal into my mouth and chewed. I swallowed hard. “What did Carlisle tell you last night?” I asked
“Bella…”
“Please just tell me”
“No”
“Why not?” I asked, he looked away for a moment “You wouldn’t like it, I doubt you’d want to hear it” he said quietly “Please, I won’t care, please” I pleaded, although I knew he wouldn’t budge, maybe Alice could tell me, or Sonia?
“I’m not telling you what you want to hear. Carlisle just wanted me to keep an eye on Ellen, that’s it”
“Why keep an eye on Ellen?”
“She tends to…change her mind a lot. She has a brilliant mind. She keeps all options open” Edward said expressionless. “What-does he think she is the one killing off her family?” I asked
“Not exactly; I don’t think so. She is Sonia’s great grand mother. But if extreme comes to extreme…” he mumbled the last sentence, I just nodded.
When I was done he walked me to his car, he opened the door for me. I stepped in. He drove us to school quickly, we exchanged a few words, but for the most part of the drive we were silent.
We stepped out on the car; he wrapped his arm around my waist. I saw Alice and Sonia; who was leaning on the wall of a building. Compared to Alice she was short, around my height. I remembered she was only 14 or 15 years old. Sonia was wearing a large black hoodie, the hood draped over some of her face; she also wore large sun glasses. She smiled at us when she saw us coming. “Hey” I greeted “Hi” Sonia sighed “What’s with the disguise?” Edward asked, he sounded as if he was teasing her. “It’s not a disguise” Sonia said “You let her wear that?!” Edward said to Alice, he motioned to the hoodie. “She got Esme to drive her to school; she brought it in her bag” Alice sighed. I laughed to myself; she must have gotten her hair cut. She was probably trying to hide her face. But she was doing a good job of it.
Alice reached behind Sonia’s head and jerked back her hood. “Hey!” Sonia yelped, Alice smiled; her hair was cut, to me it looked almost the same as Alice’s. Alice then stole her sun glasses, she looked nice but her scars were completely exposed. There were four pink lines; one on her forehead, two on her cheek and one on her chin. “You want to see what happens?” Sonia asked
“I’m sure you can think of an excuse, plus I doubt people would want to ask” Alice replied “Want to bet?” Sonia raised her eye brows. “Sure, five bucks” Alice bargained, I wondered if Sonia knew that she could see the future. “Oh common that’s it?” Sonia laughed “Make it ten at least” she continued
“Fine” Alice smiled. Sonia smiled and took of her sweater. As I expected she was wearing some kind of expensive designer outfit, but still casual. Sonia tucked the hoodie and the sunglasses into her bag, then swung it over her shoulder.
We began to walk, I wasn’t sure where we were going; we just walked. We all knew Alice already won the bet. I guessed that this bet would be over by the end of the day. Sonia didn’t win the bet in the morning, and she most likely wouldn’t in the afternoon.

At lunch Sonia beat us all to the cafeteria. She already had a plate of food set in front of her. She smiled when she saw Edward and I coming. “Hey” she greeted with a smile “Hi” I replied returning the smile. “How’s it going on the bet?” Alice asked sarcastically as she sat next to Sonia, “Nobody has ‘said’ anything, but they do stare. They just don’t want to ask” Sonia raised her eyebrows “You might as well fork over the cash” Alice smiled “The day isn’t over yet” Sonia smirked “That is if you have any money in the first place…” Alice ignored what Sonia had just said. “Hey, I do have cash. I got a very good job yesterday” Sonia stated “Where?” I asked “At a restaurant, I get good pay” Sonia replied happily “Therefore I can by my own clothes...” Sonia trailed off smiling at Alice
“I’ll burn them” Alice threatened, I laughed.
“Any way, how was the first day?” Alice changed the subject
“Pretty good” Sonia sighed, suddenly bored “Do you care?” Edward asked “No” Sonia shrugged. There was a moment of silence. Sonia reached back and rubbed the back of her neck; then moved her hand down to her shoulder. She rubbed it slowly and gently. “How was your day?” she asked me “Oh, uh normal” I replied, Edward snorted. “Nothing’s normal” Sonia smiled, glancing down at the table, her smile faded a bit and she sighed.
Sonia left sooner than the rest of us. The rest of school went as usual. Edward led me to the front the Volvo, to wait for Alice and Sonia. “What’s going on tonight?” I asked, trying to start a conversation. “I’m not sure actually. What do you want to do?” Edward replied, I sighed. I saw Alice turn the corner of a building, Sonia followed.
“Hello” Alice chirped “Hi” Edward replied. Sonia didn’t say anything, she just smiled. I guessed she didn’t win the bet yet. I looked over her scars, they weren’t that noticeable. Sonia walked over and leaned on the front of the car. I wondered if since Edward and I had nothing to do, maybe I could come over to Edward’s house. Maybe I could get the answers I needed from Sonia. “Hey-” I began, but Sonia seemed to loose all interest in what she was doing.
She began walking away, toward a couple boys; around the same age. They were dropping rocks on something. What was she doing? I began to follow, Edward held me back. I looked at him. He seemed to sniff the air. We stayed at the Volvo as Alice followed Sonia.
I saw Sonia talking to them, she pointed at what they were stoning. Alice was tugging at her sleeve. What was wrong? The two boys continued talking then one of them seemed to laugh and glance at the other. Sonia threw her fist at his face, but Alice grabbed it before she punched his face. Instead Sonia kicked him in the groin then in the stomach. The boy fell to his knees; clutching his body.
Alice led Sonia away, Sonia didn’t seem to struggle. Her face was blank; but it was obvious she was holding back anger. Sonia held out her hand; Alice placed a bill in her hand. She won the bet. Alice let her go; Sonia walked over to Alice’s car. Alice came over to us. “What was that?” I asked “They insulted her parents” Alice said. “Why did she go to them though?” I asked again “They were stoning an owl, it was practically dead by the time we got there” Alice lowered her head. “We should leave know” Alice said. Edward agreed. The owl must have been bleeding.
