This morning Audrey started making a retching/gagging sound like she was trying to throw something up. This lasted about 15 minutes on and off. I got really worried and called the vet out in Belton where we took her for her infected anal gland. They could see her right away so we packed up and headed out.
At the vets' we talked with the receptionist, tech, and then the vet. This vet is awesome. When she came into the exam room I explained that since her gland issue a few months ago she's been very nervous about the vet's office. So right there she sat down on the floor and let Audrey crawl up on her and kiss her and sniff her. She sat on the floor with her and talked to her and really bonded with her before she even started examining her. As we were standing back up Audrey wandered right out of the exam room - not through the door to the reception area but the back to the vet area! The tech was out there and scooped her up as she was checking out another exam room.
Once back up on the table Audrey was still a bit upset but more relaxed. Which was good because it was very important to get a good listen to her heart and lungs. We aren't quite sure what is causing the gagging. It has happened here and there before but not to the extent of this morning. The vet heard what might be a very small murmur on the left side. But it was so faint she wasn't 100% sure she heard it. It isn't anything to get upset about or to worry over.
The vet was really easy. She suggested a number of things we could do and said it's up to me. We're taking care of little things first. For now she is on an antihistamine to clear up any mucus that might be draining into her throat and I'm using a harness with her when she is on leash to keep any tension off her neck. I'm going to be watching her closely and making note of any more gagging incidences and recording them if I can so that the vet knows exactly what is going on.
If it happens again I'll go to the vet in a week or two and get her chest x-rayed. If not I'll still get her x-rayed at some point soon just to really know what is going on with her puppy heart. I know it isn't anything major but it is nice to know for sure and to monitor it. I also asked if there was anything else I should be doing. We walk so much but the vet said to just keep on doing what we normally do and that she is fine.
