The first week of school here went pretty well for Ran. She likes going to school, and she's already starting to pick up some English. She says the other kids are nice to her, and that there's a couple of girls that play with her at recess, so I think she's on her way to making friends even with the language barrier. She thinks her regular teacher, Ms. Williams, is nice, and she likes her ELL teacher, Mrs. Morgan. She'll still have Mrs. Morgan next year for ELL but she'll have a new regular classroom teacher. Cassandra is working out well as her nanny, too, and she's helping Ran with her English, mainly because she doesn't speak Chinese.
The tree house project is underway this weekend. Ran likes to help, as much as a seven-year-old can help build a tree house. Mostly I have her raise and lower a bucket with supplies while I'm up in the tree, using a rope draped over a tree branch like a pulley. It saves me having to keep climbing up and down the ladder.
