Ran seems to be settling in pretty well here. I brought her home about a week ago, and I took the past week off of work so that we could spend some time getting to know each other. She's excited to be here, but she misses her friends, too. Bedtime is hard for her. She doesn't like going to sleep by herself in her own room, not after being in a dorm with three other girls. Most nights I sit on the edge of her bed with her until she falls asleep. Aside from bedtime, she seems fine. She's a really sweet kid, happy almost all of the time. She likes to help out with stuff around the house, and she likes to play in the backyard. She's good at climbing trees. I think my next project around the house is going to be building her a tree house.

She starts school on Monday. She's friendly and outgoing, so I'm hoping that she'll be able to make some new friends in her class even with the language barrier. I know that she'll still miss her old friends, but I think having other kids her own age to play with here will help. I'm sending her to a public school. Public schools in the Colorado Springs area are supposed to be good, but if it doesn't work out, maybe I'll enroll her in a private school next year. In any case, it's only a month until the end of the school year. She's been placed in the English Language Learners program, and her teachers seemed pretty confident after meeting with her that she would be able to learn English fairly quickly. I'm going to keep speaking Chinese with her at home. I don't want her to forget how to speak it.

We interviewed a nanny for her this week, and she seems to be a perfect fit. Her name is Cassandra, and she's a family friend. Sam's kind of a mother figure to her, and thought that she'd be able to relate well to Ran. The two of them clicked right away. Cassandra will be picking Ran up after school and staying at our house with her until I get home from work in the evenings.
