The thing about facing an enemy, be it fear, be it yourself, be it a person, be it a group of individuals, be it a nation, is that a person turns into the very thing he is up against - he can be the same or stronger, fiercer, more brutal, and more ruthless if it need be for the reason of self preservation and of upholding what he believes is right ( Read more... )

Apologies for the late reply. I hope the horse had the patience.

First point, the use of "he' was deliberate. It may seem that I have compromised my stance in the aspect of gender. I assumed, which is a gamble on my part, that most of my readers, who personally knew me or who have been reading my entries since the birth of this journal, would not likely question my position especially when talking about sexuality. Life experiences made me believe that most of the time people always pay more attention to what is not there. The absents can be given more attention. In this case, the very absence of the "she" made its presence. Thank you. :)

Second, self-preservation is a part of every animals' instinct that demands them to survive. Pain, fear, and other mixed feelings, physiological and psychological alike, are part of the whole complex process. When uncomfortable feelings arise, the tendency is to, of course, alleviate whatever the thing causing it. I believe that it is always right and fair not to be subjected to unnecessary pain inflicted by anyone. It is indeed true that the definition of "right and fair" can be very arbitrary depending on one's perspective due to cultural and ideological differences (though I am aware that rape and murder are universally considered wrong but for the sake of simpler delivery of arguments, i'll leave this inside the parenthesis). And this is where the problem and the question of whose perspective are we taking - to whom it will be fair and right. One man's "terrorist" can be another man's "freedom fighter".

You are right when you said we should know first who it is we are fighting against and fighting for. Those will be the primary questions, the basic things we need to understand. But then again, it will take a great deal of courage to open one's mind to be able to determine the answers to those very important questions.
