For me it's less that it's an old joke and more that it wasn't set up well. You're on the right track in that Simba is a playful character and he would be more concerned with playing than paying attention to his surroundings, and I think if you did more with that you could slip in "lost the game" more naturally so it's more referential humor and less "here look at this tried and familiar meme."

The censoring thing didn't really work for me. It's a neat idea, yeah! But halfway through the first paragraph he just cuts them and it gets better? I WAS CONFUSED. Though being victorious over grammar made me snrk a little. Then it was just yelling at zombies and it didn't really go anywhere. Baaasically I guess that it boils down to not being able to see him do anything but sit there and throw a tantrum. Even then, if it had branched out more and been about things besides just "zombies are slow!" it probably would have held my attention longer?
