It was the home they had managed to find after all their trouble and they were tied to the land by that bond. . . They accepted whatever the land-their home-would do.

They shouldn't have been mean to any travelers in the first place. It doesn't solve anything to take out their bitterness on other people. Then they're no better than the people that cast the founders out.

It takes time for word to travel and they might have been ignorant of what they had done.

I couldn't say. It might have been that they learned from their mistakes, remembering how others had treated them. . . Or that they wished to impress upon others their heritage, so that it would survive them, and were kind for that reason.
