Oh man. So you totally just named the camera I've been looking into. Which is a really good thing, of course. (The Digital Rebel.)
I am pretty sure that I'm gonna get it, actually. My parents'll buy some of it, my grandmother some, and me the rest. What fun! The main thing I've been debating is whether it's worth it to buy the new Digital Rebel XT (it comes out like, now). And fortunately my birthday's still a month off, so I can wait a bit and see how that pans out.
I wish I had a film camera. I figure, this comes first. Then some nice lenses. Then a film camera. I have a weird order about these things. But then again, you've gotta remember that I'm working on a 0 operating budget, and I'm not in any way an art student. I don't even have access to a photo lab (boo!).
What I'd love to get is my dad's old Olympus fixed, but I think it's irreparably broken. He has three or four nice lenses for it, but I don't think they'd even work in the Olympus Digital SLRs, so I'm not even trying to get one (like the E-Volt, which is more tha $1000, anyway, without a lens).
When I get some more money, I'ma get something small and low megapixel, for parties and the like. Something like a Kodak Easyshare that's just a point-and-shoot camera with a big LCD and a quick flash. Because you want something small and cheap for parties, in case something happens.
On the bright side, storage cards are hellacheap now. I remember only a year ago we spent more than $150 on an xD picture card (512 MB). Now, there are 2 GB CompactFlash cards, and they sell for like $80.

Okay. Thanks a lot. (:
