Sam's apartment - Boulder, Colorado - Wee small hours of the night

Mar 08, 2008 16:22

It'd been almost a week since Cameron had been staying with Sam and he was starting to get used to waking up in what was for the moment his bedroom. The shadows playing across the ceiling had familiar shapes now and he stared up at them, letting his mind go blank as he struggled for his breath ( Read more... )

Sam, of course, had fallen asleep in the lab in the middle of working on an experiment, and had her head pillowed on her arms as she slept, lights on and blazing, pencil in hand.

At least she hadn't fallen asleep on the microscope. Again.

Cameron shook his head in amusement and quietly moved to the other side of the workbench, reaching to take the pencil from her hand so it wouldn't drop to floor. He wondered if he needed to wake her or just move her somewhere where she was less likely to wake up sore.

The movement of the pencil brought Sam awake like a shot, alert and aware and unarmed, thankfully. "Cameron." She pushed some hair out of her eyes and checked the clock. "Did I wake you?"

She figured what had probably woken him, but she was willing to pretend it was noise and light if he needed her to.

"No, I think I woke you," he pointed out, putting the pencil down on the bench. "Don't make me lecture you about how you should sleep in your bed."

"It's not like you're there either," she grumbled, not wanting to admit he had a point. She stretched her arms over her head and bent over backwards until the joints in her back popped. "Mmmm. Better."

"In your bed?" he asked, because it was easier to misunderstand and he leaned back against the table so he could face her.

"What?" Then she realized what she'd actually said, instead of what she'd meant, and blushed. "Not like that, and you know it. I meant you're not in your bed, either. Want coffee?"

Not like that could be contributing to the problem or anything.

"Nah, still done like it," he mumbled and rubbed at his eyes. "At least I have an excuse. What's yours?"

"Intellectual curiosity?" She didn't remember him being this bossy.

"Being a genius is rough," he teased as he rubbed at the back of his neck now. He always had a bit of bossiness inside him, training had just brought it out more and he was slightly on edge right now.

"It's a cross I'm learning to bear," she grinned back, then noticed what he was doing with his neck. "Want me to do that?"

He lowered his hand, watching her for an instant. "I didn't just try to sleep sitting upright," he pointed out. Not that it was no.

"Neither did I. I was draped on my lab table." Because that was so much better. "Turn around," she ordered, figuring it had been a while since he'd had human contact of the non-violent variety.

"Or we could be sane and go do this in the living room."

Chuckling, he pushed away from the table. "Maybe it will get you to sleep on a couch instead," he teased her.

"See, but then I end up under the cat," she laughed, heading into the house. "Tea? Milk? Gotta give me something to do here, Cam."

"If it gets you to actually lie down and sleep..." he replied. "Milk's good."
