Also let's forget how I can't title things
The sun is high in the sky when he meets Arthur. He’s supposed to deliver a potion to one of Gaius’ patients in the lower town, but he can’t help but go to the rescue of the young man that’s being bullied. Merlin has always hated people who pick on others that are weaker than them, just for the fun of it. He’s tempted to use his magic to make the man pay, to wipe that self-assured smirk off of his face.
It’s early afternoon when he falls in love, or, well, he realises that he’s in love. He’s watching from the side of the training field as Arthur trains his knights. He looks so strong, so beautiful, like the king that he’ll one day be, golden and fair and impossibly beautiful. Arthur turns his head to look at Merlin like he always does, to show off. The sunlight catches in his hair, his eyes deep blue. Merlin’s heart skips a beat and when it starts again, it’s hammering against his chest. And he knows that he’s done for. His magic curls up restlessly under his skin, prickling and excited.
The shadows grow longer in the late afternoon as Merlin croaks out the spell and the boat starts towards the island, taking Arthur with it. Arthur’s skin is cold and impossibly pale. Merlin has tried all the spells he knows to save him, to bring him back, but none of them worked. Merlin wants to look at him one more time, wants to see the way his eyes sparkled when he smiled, his sun kissed hair, his crooked teeth. He watches as the boat sails away from him, taking his love with it, his King. His magic is a tense coil in the pit of his stomach.
The sun sets and covers the city in a warm glow. Merlin has been here for centuries, but the sight still makes his heart skip a beat at the beauty of it. He stops and watches until the orange glow has faded to silver. When he looks back down, he spots a golden head. It has been a long time since he stopped hoping that every golden-haired man would be Arthur, but, as the man turns, his eyes are blue and there’s a set to his jaw that reminds Merlin of a time long past, of places long forgotten. His magic swells inside him. The man’s eyes dart towards Merlin and stops abruptly in his tracks as soon as their eyes meet. Merlin’s magic dances around wildly, the thin tendrils of his magic reaching out for Arthur. Merlin vaguely wonders if people can see them.
Merlin has found his King again. He takes a step forward, towards Arthur, and feels a smile break on his face.
