The sun went down but Merlin wasn’t ready to leave just yet. From the hillside he could watch the sky paint itself in reds and golds.
He had seen around 400,000 sunsets in his long, long lifetime. 400,000 days of waiting for his king, his love, to return.
It was starting to grow cooler without the heat of the sun, so he released a little magic, creating a bubble of warmth.
“It’s beautiful,” he breathed, knowing he could never tire of the vision right there.
“Yes.”
And with Arthur there, finally sharing a sunset with him again, it truly was.
