When Arthur broke from his stupor, he was out the door after Merlin. However the hallway was empty, and Arthur stood looking down both paths looking for a sign where his pigheaded servant had gone. He must have look idiotic, to his knights, standing there, looking lost.
“Don’t just sit there. Find the fool before he does something stupid.” Arthur called out to the knights setting at the table, before turning and walking down a hallway. He'll check with Gaius first.

Arthur didn't find anyone in Gaius and Merlins chambers, not that he was surprised to have Gaius gone with the fire this morning. But, Merlin’s travel pack was still there, so Arthur head out hope that he was somewhere in the castle.

It took three hours before Arthur found Merlin in the armory, of all places, sharpening Arthur’s sword. Merlin didn’t look up from his work, just focused on running the stone down the blade, with a determined face. From the pile of sharp weapons next to him, Arthur could tell Merlin had been at it for awhile too.

Sitting down next to Merlin, Arthur watched his long fingers work. Merlin was an odd mix of contradictions. One minute he could be tripping on his own feet the next, he is skilled grace. Some times he was the fool and other times he was the advisor. Right now however, Merlin looked like he wanted to run someone through with the sword he was sharpening.

“Look, Merlin, I know you’re … agitated, but -”

“Stop. Just stop, Arthur.” Merlin dropped and the stone on the bench next to him, turning his body to face Arthur, “I what you are going to say. I’ve heard it over and over, since you found out. I get it, I know. But I need you to stop it. I am not weak. And in case you missed it, we were attacked today.”

“Yes, and no one was hurt-”

“Because Arthur, I got there first. It would have taking dozens of people to form a bucket brigade, to stop that fire. In the mean while, giving the fire a chance to spread.”

Arthur just looked down, at his hands. Merlin was right. It would have taken them so much longer than what it took Merlin.

It didn’t mean he had to like it at all.

“Look Merlin, I don’t really think you understand. I… I told you, I’d go crazy if anything happened to you. It’s because-” Arthur looked over at Merlin, watching him, “it’s more than I need you in my life. I don’t know when it happened. But somehow, you became so much more than my servant or my friend.”

“Arthur?”

“When I found out about your magic, I was so scared for you. If someone found out, if something happened … I don’t know what I’d do.”

Reaching over Arthur took one of Merlin’s hands into his own, intertwining their fingers. “Merlin you make me want to be a better man. To look beyond what my father taught me about magic. I am willing to change laws my father built his kingdom on for you.”

“Arthur, I … I don’t know what this means. It sounds like -”

Arthur leaned in a kissed Merlin softly on the lips. It was chaste, but still caused Merlin’s eyes to widen, “That’s what I mean Merlin.”
