Merlin drove the route they’d plotted on the map. It took a while to get to the spot where the road ended, but according to the GPS on Merlin’s mobile, they were there. “Should we camp here since it’s late?” he asked Kilgharrah as he let him out of the pet carrier.
“I do not want to be visible from the road. Let us hike a bit further in,” the dragon-cat replied.
“You mean I’ll hike while you ride,” Merlin said as he locked the car.
“Precisely.”
Merlin grumbled a bit but took up his pack and picked up Kilgharrah then placed him on his shoulder. “Comfortable there?”
“Yes.”
“Good. Here we go.”
Merlin began hiking through the brush and forded a small stream. “How far in would you like to go?”
“About half a kilometer. That should render us sufficiently invisible from the road.”
“I agree.” Merlin kept track of the distance with his mobile, and when they’d found a small clearing, they stopped. The sun was going down and Merlin had to set up camp, preferably before it got dark.
He sat Kilgharrah and his pack down and unrolled the tent. “Camping gear is so much nicer now than it was back in the old days.”
“It makes no difference to me,” said Kilgharrah.
“Of course not,” Merlin muttered.
“What was that?”
“Nothing important. Hey, do you want to scout the area?”
“I suppose that is a good precaution.” Kilgharrah stalked into the woods around them.
“Peace and quiet at last,” said Merlin. He waved his hand and the tent assembled itself. But clearing space for a fire he did with his hands. There was just something satisfying about that. After he’d built a fire ring and had gotten dinner heated, Kilgharrah walked back into the campsite.
“We are safe here,” he said. He then began cleaning his fur.
“Are you going to go out again tonight, or can I set up magic wards around the campsite?” Merlin asked.
“Go ahead.”
After he finished that, Merlin sat down to dinner. He set out a plate of food for Kilgharrah and they ate. After dinner, they talked for a while, but once the stars shone brightly, Merlin yawned. “You ready for bed?”
“Indeed. Traveling is tiring when you can’t use wings,” Kilgharrah replied.
“Yes it is.” Merlin put out the fire and they crawled into the tent. They bid each other goodnight, and slid gradually into slumber.
