Merlin stood quietly next to the throne, observing the steady stream of dukes and earls and minor nobles who had come to swear allegiance to the new king. There were a number of royals from Camelot's closest allies too, eager to renew and preserve the bonds between kingdoms.

Arthur's expression and bearing were filled with strength and dignity. He seemed to radiate both benevolence and power. There was no doubt in Merlin's mind that the many who bent the knee to show their fealty to Arthur did it with true respect.

He recalled the numerous times through the years when Gaius stated that Arthur was not ready to become king. He'd insisted that the prince did not yet have the necessary experience, self-confidence, and steady hand to take Camelot forward and keep her safe, should King Uther die. Merlin had frequently objected to this. He'd often wished for Uther's death, for Arthur's early kingship. But today, when the time had finally come, he had to agree with Gaius.

Arthur had needed time to grow into the man he now was, to become who he was born to be: a ruler and commander that none would challenge, a king who would secure peace and prosperity for the people of Camelot and all of Albion.

Though the road to this day had been long and thorny for both Merlin and Arthur, Merlin smiled to himself and nodded his silent acknowledgement. Today had truly been worth all the efforts and the wait.
