It was driving Merlin crazy. Every time he looked at Morgana, he found her looking at him only to quickly turn away. Every time he saw her coming down the corridor toward him, she turned back the other direction. And every time he delivered her medicine, it was Gwen who answered the door. He didn’t know why this was happening, but he was going to find out. The question was how.

Merlin finally decided to hide close to Morgana’s door so he could see when Gwen left for the night. Then he’d just barge into her chambers to talk to her. It was the only thing he could think of that might work.

He decided to try it that night. Finally, he saw the door open, and Gwen left. He waited until he thought she’d be out of the citadel then crossed the corridor to Morgana’s chambers. He knocked on the door and waited until he heard Morgana say, “Gwen, you’re back?”

“I forgot something,” he said in a higher-pitched voice and waited until Morgana opened the door. He quickly slipped inside and closed the door behind him.

“Merlin! What are you doing here?”

“I came to deliver your medicine. But that’s really just part of the reason. I want to know why you’re snubbing me,” he replied.

“I am doing nothing of the sort.” She held her head high.

“Yes, you are. Every time I look at you, you look away. Every time I come down the same corridor as you, you turn the opposite direction. I can’t even say ‘hello’ to you because I can’t get close enough to say it.”

Morgana’s shoulders sagged. “I’m sorry. The truth is, I am avoiding you.” She crossed the room to her table, pulled out two chairs, and sat in one. She gestured to the other and said, “Please.”

Merlin complied. “Why are you avoiding me?”

“It’s something Arthur said to me. He thought the two of us were getting too close, so he told me to stary away from you. To avoid any hint of impropriety.”

“But why would he think that? Unless . . . you have feelings for me?”

She nodded. “I do. I want to be near you. I feel all these inappropriate feelings, and we can’t be together because of our social standings.” Her head dropped.

He reached out and took her hand. “You should know I have feelings for you, too.” She lifted her head. “I want to be with you. I think about you constantly.”

“So, what do we do?”

Merlin grinned. “Who says we can’t be together? The king? The prince? I’ll bet there are ways we can see each other.”

“But how?”

“How about this-you think about it, and I’ll think about it, and I’ll come again tomorrow night so we can discuss it. Does that work for you?”

Morgana smiled. “Yes, it does.”

“Great!” They both stood. “Then I’ll see you tomorrow night.”

She walked him to the door. “Until then.”

He bent down and kissed her cheek. “Farewell.” And he was gone.

Morgana touched her cheek. “Farewell.”
