Merlin was sure this would be a night to remember. All of Arthur’s favorite knights, Gwen, and he would be here, together, for the first time in over a thousand years. As he paced back and forth, waiting for them to arrive, Kilgharrah jumped up onto the coffee table. “Why are you pacing?” he asked.
“I guess I’m just a little nervous,” Merlin replied.
“Nervous? About what?”
“Having them all here at the same time.”
“Have you not looked forward to this?”
“Oh yes. When you first awakened me, I’ve thought about almost nothing else. But what are we going to do now? They’ll be looking for a leader. They’ll be looking for Arthur.”
Kilgharrah chuckled. “Well, of course. That is the whole point, is it not?”
“Yes, but they’ll be looking for a leader until we can find him. And that’s not me.”
“Why not? You’ve shown remarkable leadership this whole time.”
“Only because I’ve had to. You made that clear.” Merlin frowned.
“Merlin, do you think great leaders are just made? Or grow on trees? No, they are not. They grow little by little, an experience here and there.”
“Arthur is the leader. Not me.”
“Arthur was trained, little by little, an experience at a time. He did not know everything just because he was born to be king.”
“You . . . have a point there.”
“Arthur’s job is to bring balance, yours is to ‘rally the troops’ until he is found. And you will find him.”
“Thanks, Kilgharrah.”
“My pleasure.” The doorbell rang and Kilgharrah looked up at Merlin. “Destiny awaits.”
