Under the Sea

"What is at the bottom of the ocean?"

Merlin turned to Arthur and raised an eyebrow, the sun glinting in his eyes. "How so?"

"It's a place you know well, a place you love, and which I will never get to see."

Looking out across the sea beyond their beach, Merlin sighed. "I would have liked to show you. It's magical, and beautiful, but also terrifying."

"Tell me."

"Shimmering light filtering through the waving kelp forests, herring schools like silver balls against the blue, immense whales and their laments under the waves, fish of every stripe and size, swift sharks like bolts of lightning from the deep, and so many other strange creatures deeper down where sunlight hardly reaches and perpetual dimness reigns. It fills my heart and mind with awe and wonder to think about it all."

"It does sound wonderful. Immense and overwhelming."

"It is! I never tire of the sights below the surface. But caution is always needed, for in the complete darkness among crags and caves in the depths of the ocean, sinister entities dwell. Some of them are malevolent. Some hold strong powers. If they're disturbed or angered, they can cause storms, or pull ships under. And then there are the Each-Uisges, the shapeshifters. They devour their prey in the deep, although they hunt on land."

"I thought that was just a myth?"

"Arthur, don't be silly. Selkies are supposed to be myths too, yet here you are, sitting close to one."

"True. I very much love my Selkie."

"And he loves you." Merlin flashed a grin, before turning serious. "Never dismiss the old myths as fantasies and fairy tales, Arthur. There's always a kernel of truth. The Each-Uisges are real, and they're incredibly dangerous. One day, you may need that knowledge."
