Neither Cute Nor Cuddly

Returning home after many years' travels, the first thing Merlin did was visit the Tor. As expected, nothing had changed. Discouraged, he rented a cottage near Glastonbury and planned to stay there for a while.

Bored and lonely, one evening he went exploring in the attic of his temporary abode. Stacks of dusty papers, moth-eaten clothes, and a box with an old teddy bear. Its black beady eyes seemed to meet Merlin's, a challenge of sorts: 'Take me away from this dreary place, this empty life! Set me free!'

The sentiment was recognisable. Merlin empathised entirely.

Acting on impulse in response to the toy bear's imagined plea, Merlin shrugged and raised his hand. "Bebiede þe arisan cwicum," he muttered.

Suddenly, a large and fully alive brown bear reared up in front of him with a deafening roar, teeth bared, its eyes wild. The huge animal hit its head on one of the roof beams, which seemed to anger it even more.

"Oh no. No, no, no!" His heart racing, Merlin backed away and desperately reached for the ladder to the floor below.

And that was when he remembered that he'd never discovered how to reverse that particular spell.
