When Merlin got home from work, he was on the phone. “Yes, mum, we’ll be there tomorrow. I’m looking forward to it. Bye.”
“What was that all about?” Morgana asked.
“Mum wants us to come over and sort through all my old things. We’ve got to decide what to keep, what to throw out, and what to donate to a charity shop.”
“I take it we’re going over there tomorrow?”
He grinned. “Yes. She wants to turn my old room into a craft room as soon as possible.”
“I guess she’s had enough of your stuff hanging around.”
“Apparently.”
So the next day, they drove to Merlin’s mum’s house. As Hunith opened the door to them, she grinned. “Thank you for coming on such short notice. I really should have had you two do this ages ago.”
Merlin frowned. “Mum, we’ve only been married for a year.”
“Exactly.” She closed the door behind them and led the way to Merlin’s old room. “As you can see, I’ve got boxes for you to pack the things to keep and give away, and bin bags for the rest. Let me know if you need anything else.”
“Thanks, Hunith.” Morgana replied. Hunith left and Morgana turned to face the room. “Wow, it looks exactly the same, except for this.” She gestured to a trunk partly open with a teddy bear peeking out. “What’s this?”
“Oh, that’s the teddy bear my dad bought for me when mum first told him she was expecting me.”
“That’s so sweet! So it has some sentimental value then?”
Merlin crouched down to pet the bear. “You could say that. We went everywhere together until I started school.”
Morgana plucked it from the trunk and placed it in the “To Keep” box. “Well then. We’re keeping it to give to our first child, whenever that happens.”
“I agree. Now let’s see if there’s anything else in this trunk worth keeping.”
They worked through the rest of the trunk then through the rest of the room, sorting and packing Merlin’s old possessions. The project took the remainder of the afternoon, and Hunith invited them to stay for dinner.
“The room looks great,” Hunith said. “I can’t wait to make it over. Thanks for taking care of it; I really appreciate it.”
“You’re welcome, mum. Like you said, it’s been needing to be done for years.”
After dinner, Merlin and Morgana packed the “To Keep” boxes in their car. She saw the old bear and patted it. “I hope it won’t be long before we give this to our child.”
“Are you saying that you’re ready to start our family?”
She smiled and nodded. “I’m ready to start our family.”
Merlin swept her into his arms and twirled her around. “I’m so happy to hear you say that.” And with that, he leaned down and pressed their lips together.
After a while, Morgana gently pushed away. “Not here on the street in front of your mum’s house,” she said, but she smiled. “Let’s get home.”
“Agreed.” Merlin couldn’t drive home fast enough.
