Merlin yawned as he made his way to the kitchens to pick up Arthur’s breakfast. Maybe picking flowers for the prat hadn’t been the wisest choice, but it would throw Arthur off, and that was worth it every time.
He entered the prince’s chambers quietly, just to be sure he wouldn’t wake him, though he was sure there was no need. A stampede of cattle under his bed wouldn’t wake Arthur. He sat the tray down on the table and sat the flowers next to them. He fetched the only vase he knew of in Arthur’s room and filled it with water from the pitcher. After arranging the flowers into some semblance of prettiness, he turned to wake up Arthur.
Merlin yanked open the heavy drapes and said, “Time to seize the daisy, sire!” He chuckled at his clever use of words and made to drag the sleepy prince off the bed if needed.
Arthur groaned and sat up. “I think you got that wrong,” he said, getting off the bed and going to the changing screen. Merlin handed him his clothes.
“No, I didn’t. See?” He gestured toward the table.
Arthur poked his head out to look. “Oh look, flowers. How thoughtful.” He thought for a moment. “Merlin, why did you get me flowers?”
“Remember the other day when you caught me giving flowers to Morgana? I know you saw me. Later you asked where yours were. So, I thought I’d get you some.”
Merlin heard Arthur chuckling behind the screen. He emerged, dressed, and said, “I guess I asked for that, didn’t I?”
“Yes, sire, you did. Now you can eat and get on with the rest of the day. I heard there’s a garland competition for you to judge after training . . .”
