The scene when Merlin pulled into the parking lot of the apartment building he lived in was like one out of a movie. It made his already racing heart beat even faster.
There was an ambulance and police cars in the parking lot, with officers everywhere. Some were walking, some were talking, but Merlin didn’t see the two people he needed to see.
Barely remembering to park his car, Merlin immediately jumped out of the car and barely restrained himself from running. An officer was there to stop Merlin from even touching the yellow tape. “Sir, you can’t come in.”
“My family lives here. I live here! Please, I have to see them!” Merlin begged, his voice frantic as a million different scenarios ran through his head. He didn’t even know what was going on, only that his neighbor said something had happened and Merlin needed to come home.
“I’m sorry, sir-“ the officer started to say, but was interrupted when a voice called out, “Papa!”
Merlin looked at where the voice came from and he saw four year old Ainsley sitting in the back of a police car with a female officer standing next to the open door.
“Papa!” Ainsley called, waving her hands. Merlin choked out a sob as the first officer pulled up the tape and allowed him in. He didn’t even think as he rushed over to the car and bent down, immediately pulling Ainsley into his arms.
“Papa!” Ainsley greeted, her little arms wrapping around his neck as Merlin held her close, just glad to feel her alive. Only when she wiggled did Merlin pull away, still keeping her in his arms.
“Are you ok? Are you hurt?” Merlin asked, touching her face, her arm, any part of her he could to make sure she was ok.
“I got a boo boo,” Ainsley said sadly and pointed to her knee, causing Merlin to pull away more to look at her injury.
“It’s nothing serious.” The female officer assured Merlin when he saw the small bandaid on her knee. “It just looks like she got a cut from crawling under the bed.”
“Under the bed?” Merlin asked incredulously, looking at the officer. “Why- what happened?”
“Daddy told me to go to my room and hide under the bed.” Ainsley chimed in, looking at Merlin. “And- and I heard a lot of shouting and loud noises.” Merlin watched Ainsley as she spoke and he held her close when she was done, feeling his heart race again at the mention of her father. His husband.
Arthur.
He looked at the officer and frowned deeply. “My- my husband, where is he?” He asked, almost hesitant to hear the answer.
“He’s right over there,” she responded and nodded over to where the ambulance was.
Merlin glanced at the ambulance and then at the officer. “Can I see him?”
“Let’s find out,” she said with a small smile and nodded, signaling Merlin to follow her. Scooping up Ainsley in his arms, he followed her. When he saw Arthur sitting in the ambulance, getting his arm looked at, he raced to Arthur’s side.
Arthur looked at Merlin as he got closer and smiled gently, holding out his free arm to pull Merlin close to him. “Hey.” He said quietly, and that’s when Merlin lost it, finally allowing his tears to fall.
“Arthur…” Merlin whispered and Arthur looked up at him, still smiling.
“It’s ok, Merlin. We’re all ok.” Arthur assured him as Merlin felt a little hand wipe his face. “We’re safe. It’s fine.”
All Merlin did in response was pull Arthur close to him and hug him and Ainsley both, his heart hammering at the thought of how close he came to having them stolen from him.
