To the Rescue
With a tired sigh, Merlin dropped his worn satchel-bag by the door and came to slump down by the table.
Gaius raised an eyebrow. "It's been one of those days, has it?"
"I saved Arthur's life for exactly the hundredth time today, but he doesn't know about any of that, of course."
"Well done, my boy. Quite the achievement! If the prince doesn't know, at least we two both do. I'm very impressed."
Merlin was pleased. His face lit up. "Thank you, Gaius. What's for dinner?"
"I've made lamb stew, and I think we'll allow ourselves a good wine to celebrate the occasion."
"That sounds wonderful."
"Would you mind fetching-"
The door banged open, making them jump. Arthur stepped into the room, his furious face red, and his clothes soaked and messy-looking. "Merlin!" he roared.
"Sire?"
"Everything in my chambers is dripping water, as if a rainstorm passed through. I slipped on the wet floor and hit my head, you moron, and here I find you lazily lolling about. I should sack you and send you to the stocks. You're the worst servant ever!"
"I'm sorry, I-"
"Get your incompetent arse over there at once and set things right, or else..."
Merlin ducked his head meekly. "Yes, Arthur. I'm sorry. At once."
"I don't even want to know what you've been up to. Just hurry up and fix this," Arthur grumbled, slightly mollified. Turning on his heel, he left as abruptly as he'd entered.
"And what had you been up to, I wonder?" Gaius inquired, his voice mild and his eyebrow once more raised.
"My cleansing spell to remove the assassin's lethal miasma must have left wetness behind." Merlin stood up and wearily turned towards the door. "I had my hands full with the sorcerous poisoner, I thought the water would simply evaporate."
"Evidently not."
"And we didn't even get to toast my big milestone."
"I'll keep the stew warm and the wine waiting, Merlin. But now you'd better run along. If Arthur really were to sack you, those first hundred times saving his life would also be your last."
