Danger Ahead
As they descended, Merlin held his torch high.
The dancing light illuminated damp and craggy cavern walls. They reached the rocky ledge above a seemingly bottomless chasm. Beyond their small bubble of brightness, impenetrable darkness ruled.
"I had no idea the caverns were this massive," Arthur exclaimed in awe.
"...assive... ssive," an echo murmured back at them.
"Hush," Merlin said. "Be on your guard. The dragon is here, even if you don't see him."
"You should have told me about all this sooner."
"How could I, as long as my magic remained secret?"
"... secret ....ecret," the echo whispered.
Arthur harrumped, but said no more.
They stood for a little while without talking, - waiting, watching. Everything was silent, but it was a tense and uneasy quiet.
Suddenly there was a rushing noise and the sound of a rattling chain. Strong winds, as if from the beating of huge unseen wings, enveloped the two of them, ruffling their hair and tugging at their clothes.
Merlin's torch flickered and went out.
Complete darkness fell.
Out of the murk came an ominous chuckle. A deep voice spoke, slow and menacing. "Young Pendragon, we meet at last. And do I have a tale to tell."
