On This Night of a Thousand Stars
"Do you ever wonder about the stars?" Merlin said, looking up.
They were far from the lights of Camelot, and their little fire had died down. But above them, the night skies were shimmering with a million radiant pinpricks.
"Wonder what, exactly?" Arthur asked. Pulling his cloak tighter, he regarded Merlin steadily in the faint glow of their camp fire's embers.
"Well, what makes them so brilliant? Are they magical in some way? What guides their paths across the sky? Why does the North Star remain fixed?"
Arthur shook his head, bemused. "So many questions, Merlin. Nobody knows the answers. I'm just happy to know they're there. On a perfect night like this it feels good to admire them with you."
Merlin smiled in response, his breath a puff of white mist. He'd started shivering.
Arthur threw his cloak open. "It's getting colder. You'll freeze. Come here, let me keep you warm. You can still watch your beloved stars."
They were soon reclining together, wrapped snugly in Arthur's cloak. Merlin placed his head on Arthur's shoulder, but continued to study the twinkling lights above.
Suddenly, a streak of bright light flashed momentarily across the sky.
"Look, Arthur, a shooting star!" Merlin whispered, delighted. "And there's another!"
"Make a wish, then."
"I think there were two of them, just so we could each have a wish."
Arthur pulled Merlin closer. "That's not at all necessary. I have everything I could ever wish for right here by my side," he murmured contentedly.
