One fine spring day, after Arthur had become king, a routine patrol encountered Morgana. She’d emerged from the woods with her hands in the air, saying only, “I want to see Arthur.” She said nothing else when questioned, so the knights bound her hands and escorted her back to Camelot.
As Morgana was taken to the dungeons, the court was abuzz with her capture. Arthur’s privy council met to discuss what should be done with the sorceress, who hadn’t lifted her hand or her magic against anyone in Camelot. It was decided that Arthur would meet her in front of the court, to find out what she wanted.
Merlin was wary of Morgana. She’d taken every opportunity for the last few years to attack and take over Camelot. And now she was what, powerless? What was her motivation? Why did she want to meet with Arthur? He was against the plan to put her before the court, but Arthur was curious. And he admitted he was curious as well, though he’d be prepared to do whatever he had to do to protect Arthur.
The hour appointed arrived, and more than the usual amount of the court attended. Arthur sat on his throne with Merlin behind him when Morgana was led in. She was a bit dirty, but her overall countenance was somehow sad. Merlin couldn’t understand it. Her magic was there, but she wasn’t accessing it. The silence was broken when Arthur spoke.
“Morgana, why have you come? You know you are wanted for many crimes against Camelot. What do you have to say for yourself?”
Morgana stood up straight. “Arthur, I want you to know that I am sorry for everything I have done against Camelot. I have no desire to come against you or Camelot again, and I wish to atone.”
Arthur stood and walked toward his sister. “Am I expected to believe that you will cease attacking Camelot and deliver yourself to the justice of this court?”
“That is exactly what I am saying.” Her regal bearing slipped, and she turned her face directly to Arthur. “Arthur, I just want to be at peace again.” Tears began running down her face and she slipped to her knees.
“Do I have your solemn oath that you will not attack anyone or anything either with or without magic ever again?”
Morgana lifted her head. “I so swear.”
Arthur reached out a hand to Morgana and caught one of hers. He pulled her to him, saying simply, “Morgana.” He wrapped his arm around her, and hers went around him.
Guinevere ran over to the couple and threw her arms around her old mistress. The members of the court whispered amongst themselves, but no one else intervened. It looked like Morgana was here to stay.
