When Merlin finished cleaning up Morgana’s chamber, he headed back to Gaius’s rooms, but stopped when he heard Morgana and Gaius talking. For some reason, he thought it best to keep himself hidden.

He heard Gaius say, “What I don't understand, Morgana is how the fire started in the first place.” Merlin thought, he could tell Gaius how. Magic.

“It happened so quickly. It was terrifying,” Morgana replied. Since Merlin had been through learning to use his magic, he could empathize.

“It's alright. You're safe now.” Merlin knew Gaius had kept Morgana’s secret for years now, so he knew this to be true.

“You're the only person I've told about my dreams. I know I can trust you, Gaius.” It seemed that Morgana agreed. How many secrets was Gaius keeping?

“Yes, of course you can.”

“It was me. I set the room alight. I started the fire.” She knew she did it! Merlin leaned a little closer.

“I don't understand. Did you knock a candle over?” Merlin stifled a groan. Gaius knew perfectly well that Morgana had started the fire with magic.

“No that's not what happened. I did it just by looking at it, the flames suddenly leapt higher.” Morgana wasn’t going to let Gaius off that easily.

“I could've been a gust of wind.” Oh come on, Gaius, just tell her it was magic already!

“It wasn't. It was me. It was magic.” Merlin stilled. She knew it then. How could it be anything else?

“My child . . .” Gaius was still trying to placate her.

“I'm not a child!” Morgana obviously didn’t want to be placated. And she was right-she wasn’t a child anymore. Step up, Gaius.

“Last night was an accident. It had nothing to do with you. How could it have? I am going to draw you up a fresh remedy that will make you feel better, I promise.” He was still denying it? What was driving his denial? Was he simply trying to keep her safe from Uther’s wrath?

“No . . .” Oh no, Morgana was giving in. Fight for the truth, Morgana!

“You must trust me,” Gaius said finally.

Merlin couldn’t believe it. Here was the perfect opportunity to tell Morgana about her magic and teach her to use it before she set something on fire again. But Gaius was taking the coward’s way out. How could he nourish one magic user and deny the other? It was hypocritical, and he’d make sure Gaius knew that.
