When Merlin’s tear-stained face came into focus, Arthur wasn’t paying much attention. His stomach rebelled. His head hurt. It wasn’t until Merlin punched his arm, then pulled him up into a hug that Arthur remembered he should be dead.
When he groaned-the jostling didn’t help his stomach, Merlin smacked him harder. “You cabbagehead. Don’t ever do that again!”
“But I had to lift Anhora’s curse.”
Merlin scowled. “No buts. Next time, I’m drinking the damn poison.”
“We taking turns now?”
“Yes!”
“Merlin, I’m in charge. I decide.”
“I never listen to you. I’m not going to start now.”
Arthur wanted to laugh, but Merlin had his wounded bear face on. “I didn’t know you cared.”
“I don’t. But if I wasn’t always saving your arse, I’d be bored.”
“We can’t be having that.” Arthur reached over, ruffling Merlin’s hair. “I’m glad you’re here. Anhora was ridiculous.”
“Now that the curse is lifted, can we go for a swim?”
“I don’t want to see your bony behind.”
“Better than a fat one.”
Faux-sputtering, Arthur started pulling off his chainmail. “Race you!”
Merlin won, but Arthur won, too. Because seaside with Merlin was better than stuffy old council meetings any day.
