Considering the conditions under which he had met them, it was no surprise that spotting the tattoo indicating a Druid elicited a natural response in Merlin. That reaction tended to be hesitation mixed with a generous dose of curiosity, and just a smidgen of jealousy that they lived so peacefully with their abilities.

As he had laid Freya to rest in the small boat, he had caught sight of the mark on her arm. He did not truly notice it at the time, and yet, it had an impact.

He was still hesitant the next time he met someone bearing that tattoo. He was still curious. That hint of jealousy, however, gave way to regret, to grief... to blame. The Druids had turned their back on Freya; she carried their sigil but not their support. If anyone was responsible for her fate-- well, in truth, it was the sorceress who cursed her. The sorceress was not the only one, though. Surely, in a community full of those who were familiar with magic, someone could have helped her. Someone should have helped.

Of course, Merlin could not let any of those thoughts or feelings show. He was an old hat at deception by now; what was one more instance? Except, it did make him think of when he had not needed to deceive, at all. When he was free to simply be himself. With Freya.

If only she had felt that same freedom...
