It had started off as a routine patrol through the Darkling Woods. Merlin and Arthur were riding side by side, bickering as usual, when a roar sounded, and dozens of men came over the nearby hill. Everyone threw themselves off their horses and started battling. Merlin hid behind a tree and began using his magic to do things like deflecting weapons and tripping up bandits, until he saw a man in robes waving his arm and chanting words Merlin knew well. Merlin threw himself at the man and they rolled down the back side of the hill.
The man threw Merlin off with a word. He landed on his back but sprung up and pushed the man away with a flick of his hand. That began their duel for dominance. Merlin was winning when he heard a familiar voice say, “Merlin?”
He looked up to see Arthur standing on top of the hill, a look of horror on his face. The man took this as his opportunity to flee. Merlin dropped his hands to his sides and turned to face Arthur. “Arthur, what did you see?”
“I saw . . . you’re a sorcerer! I cannot believe it! You’ve been hiding this from me-for how long?” He started walking down the hill, his sword drawn.
“Arthur, I can explain, if you’ll just give me the time.”
“Answer my question. How long have you been hiding your magic from me?”
Merlin ducked his head. “Since I came to Camelot. I was born with magic.”
Arthur raised his sword. “You know what the penalty for using magic is in Camelot. I should kill you now.”
“Please, Arthur. That is your father’s law. Think of the progress you’ve made with the druids. Hate and death were your father’s legacy. Do you really want it to be yours?”
“I-”
“Arthur, I am your friend. I would never hurt you or anyone else in Camelot. Magic is like a sword-It can be used for good or for evil. In and of itself, it is not evil. It’s the choice of the wielder. And I’ve only wielded my magic for good.”
The point of Arthur’s sword lowered. “Only for good?”
“Yes. Specifically, to protect you.”
Merlin was surprised when Arthur laughed and sheathed his sword. “To protect me? That is pretty crazy. As if I need your protection.”
Just then, Leon appeared at the top of the hill. “We have the bandits taken care of. Would you two like to join us so we can go home?”
“We will be up there shortly,” Arthur replied. Leon disappeared and Arthur turned back to Merlin. “We will talk about this when we get back to Camelot. I am not done with you yet.”
And with that, they both walked back up the hill to rejoin their comrades.
