Thought some of you might be interested in stopping some of that junk mail from coming to your house which would in turn save some trees. I have listed some info below that you might be interested in. I have also listed some other environmental facts that you might find intriguing. I hope that you can use some of the information.
Mail
The Direct Marketing Association’s (DMA) Mail Preference Service lets you opt out of receiving direct mail marketing from many national companies for five years. When you register with this service, your name will be put on a “delete” file and made available to direct-mail marketers. However, your registration will not stop mailings from organizations that are not registered with the DMA’s Mail Preference Service. To register with DMA, send your letter to:
Direct Marketing Association
Mail Preference Service
PO Box 643
Carmel, NY 10512
Or register online at www.the-dma.org/consumers/offmailinglist.html.
Email
The DMA also has an EMail Preference Service to help you reduce unsolicited commercial emails. To “opt-out” of receiving unsolicited commercial email, use DMA’s online form at www.dmaconsumers.org/offemaillist.html. Your online request will be effective for one year.
Red Meat: It can take seven or more pounds of grain to produce one pound of beef. By skipping red meat just once a week you will save 840 gallons of water it takes to produce a single serving.
Clothes Dryers: The average U.S. household spends up to $135.00/ year in energy costs drying clothes. A dirty lint filter can use 30% more energy and is a fire hazard.
Computers: A laptop uses about half the energy of a desktop computer.
Programmable Thermostats: By using a programmable thermostat and turning the temperature up two degrees in the summer and down two degrees in the winter you will save approximately 880 pounds of carbon dioxide from entering the atmosphere.
Cat Litter: Try biodegradable or flushable cat litter (www.petecology.com) Most cat litter is made from bentonite clay, which is mined and does not break down. Americans dump about 2 million tons of bentonite cat litter into landfills every year.
Bathroom Tissue: If every household in the U.S. replaced just one 12-pack of 400 sheet virgin fiber bathroom tissue with 100% recycled bathroom tissue we could save
4.4 million trees
11.6 million cubic feet of landfill space, equal to over 17,000 full garbage trucks
1.6 billion gallons of water, a year's supply for over 12,700 families of four
And avoid 275,000 pounds of pollution
