<> -He don't know me very well, do he? <> -I really disagree with this statement. I feel that my family provided a healthy environment for emotional development. My brother and I were both brought up under the exact same conditions, but I turned into a fluffy little girl while he turned into, as you so accurately put it, into a manipulative asshole.
(Here comes the rant:)
In the battle of nature versus nurture, I usually side with environmental factors as being the main contributor of behavior. But on the issue of gender, I think that the case is in male nature. Males of our species are naturally more aggressive than females. In early human societies, men were generally in charge of gathering food, protecting the society, etc. (please don't bite my head off for this, Feminists; I'm talking from an objective, historical point of view) Men take this role because they are never hindered by pregnancy or the necessity to nurse a child. Men are generally larger, physically stronger, and have higher testosterone levels, while women tend to be more intelligent. The problem is that emotional characteristics of the sex that helped early man survive will only hinder social interactions today. Men are assholes because it is in our genetic make-up to be aggressive pursuers of what we want, and defenders of what we think belongs to us. Today's society frowns upon aggression, screaming, and breaking shit, but it's those very traits that allowed humanity to survive the wilderness and build society to begin with.
That, of course, is just my own personal opinion. This gentleman is completely entitled to his, but I just wanted to point out that I didn't agree.

Speaking from the hormone point of view, estrogen causes WILD mood swings in women and therefore, women have to learn how to deal with the constant flux of their emotions all the time. Men also go through a cycle of higher and lower testosterone levels in a month like women do. However, testosterone causes more aggressive effects than the crying effects of estrogen. The fact is that men and women deal with completely opposite types of hormones that cause certain personality traits in each. Now, as far as the nurturing of young men to deal with these emotions, I have to agree with the original writer. Every family is going to be different on how the teach their kids, but I do believe that there should be some sort of formal education on the matter. The original writer is right in my opinion, life is nothing but creating and maintaining relationships; may that be friends, dating, family, etc. There should be something out there to teach children how to help this fact of life, instead of realizing years later that they have a problem in this area and then seeking psychiatric help. Just my two cents.
