Friday 22nd. Heavy Gale from the W. accompanied with a very heavy sea and long swell. Under close reefed topsails. In the Middle watch Mr Morris the midshipman and Isaac Fisk, Marine, were poisined by drinking some solution of Chloride Lime. Had there most heavy timely assistance afforded them the chances are it would have been a very serious affair. Being short of water Mr Morris was thirsty and finding a jar with liquid in it he supposed it to be water. this was the Chloride of Lime Jar. He took a tumbler full of it and drank nearly half of it before he discovered the nature of he drink when he dropped the glass and ran on deck. The Marine seeing him place the glass down with what he supposed to be gin and water he thought he could drink off imperceivable this glop of godsend... This Fisk is a great drinked but was much taken in with his draught.

Sunday 24. Divine Service in the morning. Sam-l Sargeant the stoker who was wounded in the [P.469] head in Petropaulovski is very ill from derangement of the brain.
Monday 25th. Weather moderated, Carrying studding sails. Thermometer 56.

Wednesday [27] th Wind from W.N.W. going 8 or 9 knots.

Friday 29th. Fine weather persisting ship. Wind S.
Saturday 30. Wind S. E and blowing a gale. Double Reefed the sails.

Sunday October 1st. Weather thick, not seen the sun for four days past. Suppose ourselves to be about 20 Miles from Vancouver’s Island. In the evening calm consequently got up the steam.
Monday 2nd. At daylight observed the highland of Vancouvers the summit of which are covered with snow. In the evening thick fog thought we were near the straits of Juan de Fuca. 11 o’Clock P.M sounded with the deepsea lead and found bottom at 96 fathoms. 12. O’Clock came very near a vessel in the fog, handed her and found she had just come out of the strait. An American Barque homed to Sydney. Virago made little progress towards getting in all night.
Tuesday 3. At daylight fall in with the Pique frigate at the distance of the Straits of Juan De Fuca near cape Flattery. Took her in tow and arrived at Esquimalt Harbour about six o’clock in the evening. Found the President in the harbour but she had only arrived in harbour a few hours before us having been becalmed in the straits since Thursday last.
Wednesday 4th October. At Anchor in Esquimalt Harbour. Provided ourselves with some sheep and potatoes.
Thursday 5th. This morning weight anchor, up steam and proceeded out of harbour to go to Nanaimo for coals. Just as we quitted the harbour the Russian Prize Sitka came in sight we therefore proceeded towards her instead of going to Nanaimo, took her in tow and conveyed her into the harbour, then proceeded to the Coal Depot. In the evening came to an anchor near Billingham Bay which is the American side of the Sound.
Friday 6th. Early in the morning proceeded towards Nanaimo and arrived there about Noon. Operated much the Trephine on the skull of Sam-l Sargent who wounded by a Musket bull in the head at Petropaulski. On removing a portion of the Parietal Bone a quantity of pus was discharged from the wound.
Saturday 7. Coaling ship with a great many Canoes.
Sunday 8th. The natives bring a plenty of Deer Salmon with geese and duck to the ship. Divine Services.
Monday 9th. This morning at 7 O’clock Sam-l Sargent died. Post Mortem examination indicated a severe fracture across the frontal and parietal bones. Sup[p]uration between the bones and dura Mater. В ночную вахту мичман Моррис (Morris) и морской пехотинец Айзек Фиск (Isaac Fisk) отравились, напившись раствора хлорной извести. Если бы не усердная и своевременная помощь, дело могло обернуться очень серьёзно. Ввиду недостатка воды, м-р Моррис страдал от жажды и, найдя склянку с жидкостью, предположил, что это вода, а это была склянка с хлорной известью. Он налил полный стакан и выпил почти половину прежде чем обнаружил, что он такое пьёт, тогда он бросил стакан и побежал на палубу. Морской пехотинец видел, как тот выпил стакан, предположил, что это, должно быть, джин с водой, и подумал, что ничего не случится, если он тоже отхлебнёт малость нечаянной благодати... Этот Фиск изрядный пьяница и принял внутрь больше, со своим умением.

Воскресенье, 1 октября. Пасмурно, солнце не показывалось уже четыре дня. Полагаем себя милях в 20 от острова Ванкувер. Вечером штиль, потому подняли пары.
Понедельник, 2-е. С рассветом увидели холмы Ванкувера, их вершины покрыты снегом. Вечером густой, туман, думали, что находимся у пролива Хуан-де-Фука. В 11 часов вечера кинули глубоководный лот, достали дно на 96 саженях. В 12 часов в тумане сильно сблизились с судном, подошли вплотную и узнали, что оно только что вышло из пролива. Американский барк, возвращался в Сидней. [Возможно, имеется в виду Sidney в проливе Джорджии, на том же острове Ванкувер] За ночь «Virago» продвинулась вперёд немного.
Вторник, 3. Днём соединились с фрегатом «Pique» на расстоянии от пролива Хуан-де-Фука, близ мыса Лести (cape Flattery). Взяли его на буксир и пришли в гавань Эскимолт около шести часов вечера. Нашли в гавани «President», но он прибыл в гавань лишь несколькими часами ранее нас, проштилевав в проливе с прошлого четверга.
Среда, 4-е октября. На якоре в гавани Эскимолт. Снабдили себя баранами и картофелем.
Четверг, 5е. Этим утром снялись с якоря, подняли пар и вышли из гавани, чтобы идти в Нанаимо за углём. Сразу как мы вышли из гавани, в виду показалась «Ситха», русский приз, поэтому мы направились к нему, вместо того чтобы идти в Нанаимо, взяли её на буксир и отвели в гавань; затем пошли на угольную базу. Вечером пришли в залив Беллингхема [у Тревана Billingham], что на американской стороне пролива.
Пятница, 6-е. Рано утром направились в Нанаимо и прибыли туда около полудня. Долго оперировал трепаном на черепе Сэмюэла Сарджента, раненного в голову мушкетной пулей в Петропавловске. По удалении части теменной кости из раны вышел гной.
Суббота, 7. Загрузка судна углем с помощью великого числа каноэ.
Воскресенье, 8-е. Аборигены доставляют на корабль много оленьих туш, лосося, гусей и уток. Богослужение.
Понедельник, 9-е. В это утро, в 7 часов Сэмюэл Сарджент умер. Исследование Post Mortem показало большую трещину через лобную и теменную кости. Скопление гноя между костями [черепа] и dura mater (твёрдой мозговой оболочкой).
