I have three New Year's Resolutions this year:
1. Do a half hour of yoga three times a week.
2. Avoid non-organic sugars.
3. Try a new recipe each week.
The first is because I'm slipping out of the yoga habit and I NEED yoga in my life. My lower back and hip are starting to hurt when I wake up in the mornings and I know it's because I'm not stretching. Plus, yoga keeps me sane. Seriously.
The second is because I know I have too much of a sweet tooth to cut out all sugar, but if I give up non-organic sugars it'll help me avoid more junk. I either have to buy the expensive organic stuff (which I mostly can't afford) or make it myself, which is time consuming and I'm lazy. I have a small stash of Divine chocolate bars to keep me from going insane, and I made some banana and pumpkin breads last week, so I'll be ok for awhile.
And the third is because I feel like I've gotten into a food rut. I don't cook much like I used to, I eat the same things over and over. I have books and books full of fantastic recipes I've never tried. I need to get out of my rut and expand my food horizons. Plus, I enjoy cooking and it makes me keep my kitchen clean because I can't cook in a messy kitchen. I hate doing dishes, but I'll do them so that I have space to cook.
So last night, before John and I went to see Avatar (both awesome and disturbing) I made pasta with a caramelized onion sauce, with white wine, spinach and gorgonzola, topped with toasted pecans and asiago cheese. It was good, plus it was made with stuff I already had lying around the house, yay! Only I have a bunch of carrots so I thought about making some carrot soup, but I used up all my onions in the sauce! ha! Normally I'd just run to the store and pick up more, but it's snowing pretty heavily out there and my car is buried and I'm feeling lazy in regards to snow shoveling, so I'm just going to stay in for now.
