By which I mean, plants in the garden which I haven’t planted. From the left: fern, Tellima grandiflora, Solomon’s Seal. The pink flowers in the background are Herb Robert. These all grow at the base of a hedge, so don’t interfere with my cultivated plants. I’m lucky with the Solomon’s Seal, which I’ve always loved (my mother grew it). In my old garden, the leaves were shredded every single year by the filthy maggots of gooseberry sawfly. Here, no problem.

I’m so glad that last November I took the trouble to plant up a trough on a freezing cold day, because the violas have been in flower ever since and this is how they look now. Gardeners always have to be thinking ahead.
