Mondo Update

Jul 31, 2007 09:52

Since these are my last few hours with a high-speed internet connection, I figured I'd give this thing one last update before moving into my aunt and uncle's house later today.  It'll be broken up under cuts in case you don't want to read parts (or all) of it.

Life:
Life has been crazy lately, and won't slow down for another week and a half, but oh well.  The fact that a year from now I'll (hopefully) be in some school teaching has been weighing on my mind a lot lately.  Growing up is scary, but necessary.  I find myself coming up with all these contigency plans about where I'll be and then have to remind myself that I still have a year to get there.

I take the PRAXIS on Saturday, which is a test to make sure I know enough biology to teach it.  I have a four inch high stack flashcards I've been spending (not enough) time with.  But they will certainly be put to good use this week.  As a reward for getting through the test, I'm going to be going to Mongolian BBQ for free with some friends from home.  In case you aren't familiar with the place, it's all you can eat and you come up with your own dinner.  You grab a bowl and pick your meat (fish, calamari, shrimp, chicken, steak, beef tips, etc), then your choice of veggies, and finally some oils and spices to make a sauce.  Then you hand it over to one of the guys working the massive grill and enjoy.  They have little recipe cards you can follow or you can just come up with your own crazy concoction.   We usually went once a year at Ohio State as a treat, and I haven't been there in about a year and a half.  Very excited.

I'm going to Oklahoma for my cousin's wedding on Sunday (the wedding is a week from Friday, I go down there on Sunday--poorly worded, sorry).  I haven't been down there for a few years, and it will be good to go back.  I'm kind of scared to see how big my cousin's daughters are, but that's what happens.

Weekend Highlights:
I spent this past weekend down at
mustafears house.  Here are some highlights:
-"Sweet Cheeks" -  her younger's sons nickname because he has nudist tendencies.
wyns and I joke that it's not an official trip to their house until he runs into the room stark naked.  It took seven hours into the four day trip for this to happen, and occurred four or five times after that.
-Meeting
lola64 via telephone.  I knew she was a sweetheart before the call, but our conversation confirmed it.  As did the fact that she's hilarious.
-Going to the Vineyard.  This is not to say I like one church over another, but going back to the Vineyard is like rediscovering an old, favorite meal.
-Watching movies (V for Vendetta, The Greatest Game Ever Played, and parts of JFK, A New Hope, and The Empire Strikes Back).
-Plotting storylines.
-Running my awesome awards show (even if the people working above me stressed me out and caused me to have several rants).
-Seeing my friends win awards--way to go
irishsmuggler!  I expect at least two updates; one for each award you won.  And congrats to
oqidaun  as well.  I haven't read your stories yet, but it's on my "Things I Need to Do Someday" list.
-The younger one quizzing me on Thomas the Train trivia, of which I know pretty much nothing.  He would ask me a question, I would miss it, he would tell me the answer, and then ask me the exact same question.  So I made the mistake of only remembering the answer for about ten seconds.  He then got smart and switched it up and made fun of me for not remembering things he told me two minutes earlier.
-Being able to help out friends.

BSG:
Since I'm getting ready to move into a house with a dial-up internet connection, I've been watching mondo BSG the last week.  I'm now halfway through the second season with the last episode being the one about the black market.  Some thoughts:

-Really glad I got to know Anders.  I didn't know anything about his background before, and now seeing that I understand why he and Kara are together.  And personally I think he's better for her than Lee.
-My love for Adama and Roslin has only grown by leaps and bounds.
-I heart Helo.
-After watching the introduction to the Pegasus, I'm very excited about the movie this November.  I'm sure the backstory there is very dark and troublesome, but I'm interested to watch it nonetheless.
-Michelle Forbes is awesome.  I won't like I kept expecting to see wrinkles on her nose and have people call her Ro.  She rocked those bangs like no one's business.
-Not that I'm one to go burn bras or anything, but it was really cool to have that one brief moment where everything was being run by a woman.  Laura was President, Cain was the admiral of the fleet, Kara was setting up the mission, and it seems that it's always the female cylons who are really in charge or willing to get things done.
-I seriously underestimated Tricia Helfer's acting chops.  To see her go from playing 6, to doing a dead on impersonation of Kara, to playing the captured cylon on the Pegasus in a handful of episodes has been amazing.  I didn't think she was a bad actress before, just didn't realize how talented she was.

With that, it's time to pack up the last of my stuff, clean, and move out of here.

movies, tf.n, tv, awards, life, ohio state, star wars, vacation, battlestar galactica, friends, school, family
