Francis has a student in his class who loves and adores the University of Utah. This boy and I have had a rivalry since the day he first brought his UofU bag to school. He lifts his bag, smiles, and gives me a thumbs up. I boo him from afar.
I'm a very mature teacher.
This boy is currently in my Crucial Concepts class, and today as he was working in the back, I heard him say, "BYU sucks!"
"Riley!" cried I. "We don't say such things in my class room."
"Go Utes!" he said.
"Riley!" cried I. "We don't say bad words in my classroom!"
He took that pretty well, even with the other BYU fans saying, "Ooooooooh!" in the background.
It sparked quite the debate which involved much yelling and no multiplication practice (again, great teacher!)
In the end, he and I made a deal. The BYU vs. UofU game is next weekend. I promised him a candy bar if the U wins. He promised me he would come stand in front of my class and say BYU is the best if BYU wins.
Sweet victory, you'd better be mine.
-----------------------------------
I cleaned my house today, and did a many (but not all) dishes before dinner was ready. It went largely unnoticed, so I am congratulating myself here.
Self, you done did good! Why, it looks positively lovely in here! Hark, did the floor get swept? Amazing!
Thank you, self. Really, it was hardly any trouble. Thanks for noticing! I might go blush now.
OH. Speaking of blushing, I still do it when people look at me. I had tithing settlement tonight, and just knowing my contributions were being scrutinized by the Bishop ("scrutinized" here meaning "casually glanced at because that is his responsibility"), I was red to the hairline. Quite pathetic, really, but I do so dislike being the center of attention. I highly doubt he noticed. Well, maybe not. He did ask after Boy Who Smiles immediately after, so he may have noticed then and misattributed my blushing to that. 'Course, if he'd asked about Boy Who Smiles first, I still probably would have been red to the hairline. This whole turning red thing is really an unfortunate problem.
You know what is NOT an unfortunate problem? Secretary Appreciation Day (or is it support personnel appreciation day? Or paraprofessional appreciation day? You know, that day wherein we celebrate everybody in school who is not the principal or a teacher), because that is the day when my school provides me with free cake. Mmm, free cake. I'll appreciate anybody you want, so long as I get free cake out of it! I love me some cake.
And now I make an end of my blatherings. End!
teaching,
boy who smiles,
