Sara seems like a literal person. I don't think she'll come back for the premier. I think she'll truly take time off. December sweeps I could see, a holiday episode. It would give TPTB time to see how the show is faring. Bring her back at least as a guest. But my gut says she won't be back for most of this season.
Sara's always been very grateful about working. Actresses over 40 don't have many opportunities. This exit struck me like the Dempsey departure last season - rushed and patched together. I do believe there contract issues at least in part, hence the Penny arc. The cast is slowly responding, making me wonder when they found out. Shondaland controls actors media output. Sara did acknowledge only Ellen in her exit tweet, but ABC/Shonda/Ellen are trying so hard to make everyone see Ellen is A Viola Davis or Kerry Washington, it seemed like a Shonda request to phrase the tweet that way.
The exit at this time, in this manner, with less than 2 MINUTES of screen time in the finale was odd. Was it Shonda testing new dynamics in the cast as it moves forward without Sara or was there something personal going on in Sara's life?
The whole Penny storyline was bizarre. I can't believe that was what these writers came up with. I blame Shonda for a poorly executed season. The numbers don't support that this was a horrible season. I believe many people, like myself, were hanging on, waiting for it to get better, especially with the press releases and sneaked peaks that toyed with fans. The bait & switch was standard operating procedure for Shondaland. The fall will be telling.
I believe Sara will be back eventually, baring some crisis. The legacy of Callie Torres needs to end on a stronger note, not giving up a well-earned, well respected position to chase some intern across the country. That's not closure. That's not a strong female character. That is definitely not the badass Callie Torres. Whether it be for one episode or another season, she'll be back to end this right. Sara knows that Callie is an iconic character. I think Callie & Arizona will end up together. We may only get an episode, but when Callie returns, it won't be with Penny and she won't be destined for solitude. I'm choosing to believe there will be a reconciliation with Arizona. Jessica Capshaw signed on for 3 years I think. So isn't she around through 14?
In the interim, I wish Sara well and speedy returns.
