There’s a strangeness in the air. All the sounds sift through muggy, like a scream coming through a pillowcase stuffed with feathers. My sight is blurred by the waves in the air, this parking lot is scorching hot. So hot that my heart and lungs stick to my rib-cage as they pound and expand.
I clench and unclench my hands, listening to the skin make a sound like velcro as it unsticks. Shifting my stance I wait, watching as cars swerve around me. It should be coming. That is why I’m here waiting. An SUV honks at me to get out of its way. I casually erect my middle-finger in their direction. They make their way around me like all the others as it realizes I’m not moving. Why the hell’d it have to be here?
Then I feel it, like the breeze of all the passing cars but cooler. A soft bitter scent fills the air, conquering the sickening aroma of exhaust and gas amplified by the heat. I can hear its breath in my ear as it pants all around me, each breath casting out crystals of sulfur. Its rotting egg stench overwhelming.
Suddenly I see it. Its arms stretching out before me, hair waving, twiggy and dead. The eyes glow a deathly yellow, not even the whites are white. The nude body then appeared, sexless and sallow, chest heaving casting out more stinking clods. Behind it were cocaine-white wings, flaking off in bits of poison feather and emitting a fine powder.
A clawed hand is held out. I try to remember why I’m here. The jaundiced creature gives an insistent gasp as it chokes on this humidity. Sweat of indecision rolls icily down my brow. A powerful shriek emits itself from my surroundings and then by body jumps and jerks, the creature temporarily flashing out. Again it makes a grab for me but is gone, my form slipping into another seizure. The cocaine wings flap furiously somewhere back in my mind.; sulfur spits angrily into my brain; and then my eyes open. There are faces above me. I hear a siren. Where am I?
