Speculating Television: Winter Premieres 2013

Jan 04, 2013 00:00

It's the turn of a new year, and that means midseason shows are starting their premieres. Which means, of course, I have to talk about the ones I'm returning to and the new ones that I'm really interested in. Please keep in mind, though, that I'm not going to talk about shows that are coming back after a midseason hiatus. Because I talked about THOSE in the fall, you know? Now that THAT'S cleared up, let's chat:

Justified, Season Four (FX, premieres Tuesday, January 8th @ 10:00 pm EST)

No, Justified isn't science fiction or fantasy. It is, however, one of my favoritest series on television, and because it's loosely based off on Elmore Leonard's stories ("Fire in the Hole"), I'm allowed to talk about it here. This is one of those shows that when I hear of another convert, I get a little thrill and do a giddy clap. I want to shake their hands, ask them how far along they are in the show, and then promise them that once they watch season two, they'll never go back.

Or something. Because after the awesome pilot, season one has a few meh episodes, but once it found its stride halfway through the season, it took off.

Yeah, one could say it's another cop show. But it takes place in the South. And it's full of Southern humor, and by that I mean it's dark and funny. Southern humor means you're laughing at things you're not sure you should laugh at but do anyway. And there's also the excellent Timothy Olyphant (formerly of Deadwood), who is LONG overdue for an Emmy, a Golden Globe, and whatever other award you want to name.

Justified is awesome. So if you aren't watching it, you should make plans to rectify that situation.

Continuum, Season One (SyFy, premieres Monday, January 14th @ 8:00 pm EST)

Yeah, I talked about this in my Fall 2012 post, but at the time, I didn't have a premiere date, and now I do! I've heard good things about this show from its Canadian fans, so I'm thrilled that SyFy is bringing it to the U.S. audience. I'm even more excited to have Rachel Nichols back on the small screen. I've enjoyed her work ever since I saw her in Alias, and I'm really hoping this is a fun, enjoyable show. Plus, it's got TIME TRAVEL. Butt-kicking heroines and TIME TRAVEL. Please, please be awesome.

The Following, Season One (Fox, premieres Monday, January 21st@ 9:00 pm EST)

No, it's not science fiction/fantasy. And yes, it looks like another cop show, but it's about a serial killer! And it has Kevin Bacon! And who doesn't love Bacon (hmmm, bacon….)? Anyway, before I go mixing too many metaphors, this looks like it's worth checking out, so we'll see if the show lives up to the hype.

The Americans, Season One (FX, premieres Wednesday, January 30th @ 10:00 pm EST)

No, this isn't science fiction/fantasy either. But it looks so compelling! Russian spies living in American, but the catch? The show takes place in the eighties! I'm so tickled I can't see straight, so I'm hoping the show also lives up to the hype. Also, it had Kerri Russell. Fans of Kerri Russell should've be totally stoked right now. :)

Game of Thrones, Season Three (HBO, premieres Sunday, March 31st @ 9:00 pm EST)

This season will be based off of A Storm of Swords. Need I say more? Because seriously, this season is probably going to BLOW MY MIND. And remind me that I really need to read A Feast of Crows soon. But still. BLOW MY MIND. I've got high hopes, HBO. Don't let me down!

Defiance, Season One (SyFy, premieres April 2013)

And lastly, this. It's both a television show, and a video game. Their tagline: Watch the show. Play the game. Change the world. This could be the most awesome thing SyFy has ever done, or it could be a hot mess that deserves points for trying. But the trailer looks too awesome to not give the television show a shot, so I'm happy to see what SyFy has in store.

What winter premieres are you most looking forward to? What shows can't wait to see back on your small screen? I don't list any comedies here, but I'm thrilled that Community will be back in February!

What say you?
