I read Watermind and enjoyed it, although I felt that the characters were a little two dimensional. The concept of a Watermind, though, is fascinating.
Yes, I read Hyperthought as well. It was okay, but not outstanding, as evidenced by the fact that I read it when it first came out and can't remember much about it. ;)
I think that Watermind is an improvement in both plotting and writing style, even if characterization is still a bit shaky.
You may want to order that one first, so you get a wide-spread sampling of Bacigalupi's work, and then go from there. I think EVERYONE should love his work, but since both are in hardcover and I can't yet attest to the debut novel, the short story collection might be the way to go first. :)
