I should be doing my stupid essay on Nineteen Eighty-Four, which, I must say, is one of the most over-rated books EVER.
My essay question is this, for the literary-criticism lens (yes, we have to fucking call them lenses) of close-reading:
Using Aristotle's definition of tragic hero, determine whether Winston Smith qualifies.
I have beenm asked to not be too deep. In Grade 11 English. Dear god.
I had to show my teacher my thesis, his immediate reaction was, "Careful, you're getting deep!"
My thesis is this: "Winston Smith is not literally a tragic hero. However, he is a metaphorical one."
It's like he saw the word metaphor and ran screaming. Bastard.
