100 Things: Discussion 1 - Googling Leads to Cancer

Apr 16, 2012 12:20

I think it's incredible how we can wonder 'how does x work' and 'why is x the way it is' and now we can simply go and look it up online. I honestly believe this is one of the biggest reasons I don't go to libraries anymore, because it's not like I don't read, or do research or any combination of pursuing the infamous 'why'. It's simply easier to click open a new browser tab and type out my query in any combination, and find a wide variety of answers.

The problem with this, however, is also that people who put information onto the internet may not be as informed as they believe, or as we are led to believe. Sometimes the person looking for the information might not be as good of a judge as to whether or not the search results make sense.

Basically, I'm going to just go out and say I tend to be one of those people whose googling goes from point a to point OH GOD THE WORST POSSIBLE THING. it's not the fault of the internet, it's just my tendency to expect the worse, so when I search for the sourse of the hideous gurglesludge sound in my new apartment, or the appearance of small black flecks on the floor, I'm inevitably preparing for the worst search result, even if the less alarming one is more likely to be true.

This is also why I'm very, very careful about googling anything to do with my health. Inevitably, my symptoms will probably list cancer.
